Additional Information
If you think of Brazil and its musical rhythms, you will immediately think of samba and bossa. Probably also to MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), which mixes rock, disco, electro, and all their possible fusions. But you might forget forró, a genre that is just as important as samba. Like a rather vast family, forró takes on many forms, fast, slow, in between, etc. In Montreal, an all-women group named Forro das Comadres has just been formed by Silvinha Georgia Gomes, in order to bring this music deeply rooted in Brazilian traditions, people and local popular festivals, authentically, here in the metropolis. On July 18, 2026, at Club Balattou, during the International Nuits d’Afrique Festival, Forro das Comadres will present their art alongside Flavia Nascimento, a singer deeply rooted in both her Brazilian cultural origins and Quebec culture. Discover in this interview the origins of forró, its characteristics, and more. Listen as Silvinha and Flavia share their visceral love for this music, and even draw connections with Quebec (La Bolduc, for example) and France!
