Orientalys 2026 | Kabyle All-Night Event, “A Sensitive Journey Through Memory”

Interview by Alain Brunet

Presented on Saturday, August 15, at Club Soda as part of the Orientalys Festival, the Kabyle Nuit Blanche is described as “a sensory journey through Amazigh memory, poetry, and creativity.” This triple concert features three headliners rather than one—three Kabyle artists with distinct styles and from different regions, whether from Amazigh Algeria or the diaspora.

A singer who is very active in Algeria, North Africa, and wherever there is interest in Kabyle/Amazigh culture, Noria has gained widespread recognition, particularly for her tributes to Amazigh icons such as Matoub Lounès. Her powerful voice has a slight roughness to it, giving her the authority of a popular diva. Without a doubt, Noria has real presence; her commanding presence is evident from the very first notes.

Djaffar Aït Menguellet is the son of the legendary poet and singer Lounis Aït Menguellet; he has always been immersed in Kabyle poetry, having been introduced to the flute and synthesizer by his father from childhood onward. He literally grew up with it! Today, he plays about ten instruments and incorporates the lyrics of his father and Si Moh into his own compositions.

Menad Harkat, who moved to New York about ten years ago, was a guitarist and later a singer in the band Debza after founding Iskra. He is said to have “forged a musical signature deeply rooted in Amazigh culture.” Today, his music draws on Amazigh and Mediterranean cultures, while also evolving within a New York and North American context, constantly adapting to the daily life of the diaspora.

Speaking from New York on the eve of this Kabyle All-Night Event, Menad Harkat introduces and explains this extensive and generous program to us.
