À 23 ans, la saxophoniste ténor ZOH AMBA n’est rien de moins qu’un phénomène. Sortie de son Tennessee natal pour s’installer à New York et mue par une énergie hors du commun, elle fait tourner beaucoup de têtes, à commencer par celles d’improvisateurs qui ont deux, trois, voire quatre fois son âge. L’an dernier, elle a publié trois albums encensés par la critique. Son tout premier comme leader, O, Sun, a été réalisé par JOHN ZORN pour l’étiquette Tzadik, ce qui est déjà un gage de talent. Elle y est accompagnée par le jeune pianiste MICAH THOMAS (Billy Drummond, Immanuel Wilkins), le bassiste THOMAS MORGAN (Bill Frisell, Jim Black) et le batteur Joey Baron. Elle a aussi endisqué et joué avec MATT HOLLENBERG, Tyshawn Sorey et William Parker.
On a rarement vu une musicienne (ou un musicien, d’ailleurs) intégrer si profondément l’histoire du free jazz et trouver sa propre voix à un si jeune âge. Sa musique est animée du sentiment d’urgence d’un Albert Ayler, mais aussi du genre d’appel dévotionnel qu’on peut entendre chez Alice Coltrane ou Matana Roberts.
Tenor sax player ZOH AMBA, age 23, is nothing less than a phenomenon. Born in Tennessee, she moved to New York pushed by an unmatched drive, and she has been drawing a lot of attention since, notably from improvisers who have twice, three times, and even four times her age. Last year, she released three critically acclaimed albums. Her debut as a leader, O, Sun, was produced by JOHN ZORN for the Tzadik label—quite a seal of approval! Seldom have we seen a musician (man or woman) digest so deeply the history of free jazz and find their own voice at such a young age. AMBA’s music is driven by an Albert Ayler-like sense of urgency, but also features the kind of devotional call one can find in Alice Coltrane or Matana Roberts.
