Ses albums Le Dernier Empereur Bantou (2014) et MAKANDA at The End of Space, the Beginning of Time (2017) ont été nommés au Prix de musique Polaris, tandis que José Louis and the Paradox of Love (2022) a remporté le prestigieux prix. Avec TRIANGLE D’OR: Shadows into Gold, il poursuit une œuvre portée par le mouvement, l’intime et le récit.
