Quatuor Molinari présente « Nouvelle ère »

Fri 24 May 2024 • 07:30 pm classique
· by Rédaction PAN M 360

The Molinari Quartet’s “New Era” concert features works by forward-looking composers.

The year after writing The Rite of Spring, Igor Stravinsky composed Trois pièces pour quatuor à cordes (1914). These three short pieces are composed in a very minimalist, stripped-down style. Quebec composer Michel Gonneville presents his creation “L’atelier est la maison est l’atelier”, commissioned by the Quatuor Molinari. The work was inspired by a painting by visual artist Mario Côté, as well as Stravinsky’s Three Pieces, Webern’s Op. 28 and Gilles Vigneault’s song “Mon pays”.

Finally, the Molinari Quartet will play Arnold Schoenberg’s Second String Quartet. This work by the great master of the Second Viennese School is a turning point in the history of music, with not only the introduction of a soprano voice in the 3rd and 4th movements of the quartet, but also the abandonment of tonality. The text of Stephan George’s poem “Entrückung” (Rapture) “I can already feel the air from another planet blowing” reveals the new path Schoenberg would take from this point onwards.

Young up-and-coming soprano Odile Portugais joins the Molinari Quartet for the vocal part in both the Schoenberg and the Gonneville.
