Among the indoor concerts presented by the Orientalys Festival, Rakcha Band—featuring Tunisian musicians who have emigrated to Montreal—will perform this Friday, August 14, at Ausgang Plaza. These professionals, now based in Quebec, were raised on the oriental jazz of their compatriots Fawzi Chekeli, Anouar Brahem, and Dhafer Youssef before moving to the West and changing the course of their lives. Now they’re in action! The ney (flute), darbouka (percussion), bendir (percussion), and other traditional North African instruments intertwine with drums, bass, and keyboards. “Every ancestral rhythm finds a second life here,” in a jazzy fusion context with a funk-rock edge where Eastern melodies—inevitably microtonal—take center stage. And that’s why percussionist Nabil Chemli explains the ins and outs of it all.
