Kallisto – Khevre

· by Frédéric Cardin

Khevre (which means “circle” of friends in Yiddish) is the latest release from the Montreal-based group Kallisto. I’ve already told you about this quintet a few times, in an interview, a concert review, and an album review, always in a positive way.

KALLISTO CONCERT REVIEW

REVIEW OF KALLISTO’S LIVE IN MONTREAL ALBUM

Khevre is an EP of less than thirty minutes, but it is a fairly explicit concentrate of Kallisto’s style, moreover in a quite successful first studio production. The band gives off a pretty striking dose of energy on stage, and the roundness of the bass, the singing lyricism, sometimes very danceable, of the clarinet and cello, the vibrant magnetism of the guitar and the rhythmic athleticism of the drums are very well captured and rendered by the sound recording made at The Room Studio in Montreal. If you have already seen Kallisto in concert, or heard the album Live in Montreal, you know what to expect and will certainly not be disappointed. If it’s your first time, the risk of recidivism is high, I’m sure. The mixture of Jewish klezmer, Balkan rock, Turkish folk, soaring psychedelia, surf rock, and all sorts of other thrilling trifles is indeed quite inviting to “come back for more,” as Brel used to say.

Dance the traditional hora while headbanging, with a Hawaiian shirt or wearing a shtreiml, with Kallisto, it all fits perfectly.
