Additional Information
Ascenseur pour l’échafaud is a legendary soundtrack. Miles Davis improvised it in a few hours, during the night of December 4 to 5, 1957. Its muted, nocturnal atmosphere has become an iconic signature of a certain style of urban film music, and has been copied many times since. In 2026, the Montreal International Jazz Festival will celebrate the centenary of the birth of the famous trumpeter. One of the programmers’ ideas was to ask Montreal trumpeter Rémi Cormier to recreate the famous score live with the film projection. But, as Rémi Cormier says, Miles would probably never have wanted his music to be foolishly replayed note for note. The Quebecer therefore proposes HIS version of this unforgettable music. What will it consist of? Find out by listening to the interview I conducted with the musician.
