Discos Pacífico is the recent Cali-based offshoot imprint of the Bogotá label Llorona, a 15-year-old platform for quality Colombian roots music old and new. Diego Gómez, a producer and DJ under the moniker Cerrero, oversees both. Though his stage name, in translation, suggests the rough, raw, and wild, his single with the leaders of Tumaco band Bujeco fits the “pacific” descriptor, and not just because the label, artists and sounds are based on Colombia’s west coast. “Chureito en la mañana” is a comfortably haunting slice of electronic dub, a patient, cushioned cumbia groove that carries the chureo, a short, cycling vocal refrain—often a lament, certainly so in this case. Two additional dub versions follow on the EP, each even more misty and narcotic. This single precedes a busy autumn for Gómez and his new label, promising remixes of Bujeco and fellow signees Semblanzas del Río Guapi, prior to Cerrero gigs in the U.S. (on the Pacific coast… of course).
