After a career spanning over 50 years, Sparks still have something relevant and refreshing to offer. A Steady Drip, Drip, Drip proves it over 14 inspired and inspiring tracks. While Sparks may not have had all the success they deserve, nor always made great albums, they are still one of those beautiful anomalies of pop music, always a bit in leftfield, eccentric and slightly unconventional. From one album to the next, they have built up a very enviable reputation, never where one expects them to be, in the process influencing many artists who are now just as influential. On this 24th effort, Sparks pick up the thread of the previous, celebrated Hippopotamus of 2017, with a little more substance, shall we say. Composed of tracks with baroque pop colours, others more electro-pop, or art-rock like in their more electric period, and some a little more in the line of The Who of the ’60s, A Steady Drip… offers an almost complete overview of what the brothers Ron and Russell Mael have done best since their recorded debut in 1972. And as they sing it so well on “iPhone”: “Now put your fucking iPhone down and listen to…” …Sparks!
