Ian Noe – Canyon Falls Trailer Band

· by Stephan Boissonneault

Ian Noe disappeared for a while, and now he’s back with a 16-song double album and a fake band.

Canyon Falls Trailer Band is his third album, and it’s built around a made-up group playing one night only, hoping the right person in the right suit is in the room. Sort of Band on the Run, but more outlaw country.

It’s a bold frame, and it works because Noe doesn’t use it as a gimmick. He uses it as a stage to fill with drunks, dreamers and long shots, the kind of people he has always written about.

It also sounds like a band in a room. Most of it was cut live in Nashville over one intense week, and the grit stayed in the grain. Harmonica, fiddle and pedal steel drift through the songs like smoke through a bar, and the whole thing leans harder and looser into outlaw country rock than the quieter folk of his earlier records. “The Heidelberg Fisherman’s Ball” is the best proof, a rowdy Eastern Kentucky gathering of a song with a swagger that’s hard to fake.

Then there’s Noe’s voice. Nobody sings like Ian Noe. It’s weathered, crooked and completely unmistakable, and it makes every character sound like someone you met once at closing time and never forgot.

Sixteen songs are a lot. Even so, this is the sound of a man who walked away and came back with something to say. I’ll be revisiting it soon.
