With Frotae Volume 2, the composer Liberté Anne (Lymberiou, by her last name) explores the world of just intonation, a kind of well-tempered microtonality with 22 notes per scale. Unlike full microtonality, just intonation offers a kind of ‘calm’ harmonic floating, which often allows for the creation of peaceful atmospheres and, in this case, quite ethereal and introspective ones. It is barely if, occasionally, a bubbling activity manifests itself. In general, therefore, the saxophones (and the glissotar, a “saxophone” equipped with a rubber strap that allows it to “slide” between notes) intertwine their sounds and partially microtonal harmonies in a rather pleasant collective ecumenism. Greetings to the performers, as mastering the correct intonation is really not easy.
