Additional Information
Mezghena de Montréal is an association dedicated to Arab-Andalusian music. This North African style originally developed during the 8 centuries of Muslim occupation in the Iberian Peninsula, particularly in Andalusia (Al-Andalus), and then continued its evolution in the Maghreb after the fall of Granada in 1492 and the expulsion of the Moorish populations.
A few centuries later, waves of Maghrebi emigration to the West gave rise to Arab-Andalusian music practices, including in the greater Montreal area which has the Mesghena Montreal association, founded in 2014 and whose large orchestra has been performing since 2016.
This tenth anniversary will be commemorated with a special concert on Saturday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m. in the Désilets Hall at Collège Marie-Victorin. To learn more about Mesghena Montréal, PAN M 360 presents this interview with Sidali Mohand Arab, principal conductor and artistic director of this unique orchestra.
