Sunset Rubdown
Il y a vingt ans, Spencer Krug a commencé à utiliser le nom de Sunset Rubdown pour ses enregistrements en chambre solo, des expériences trop lo-fi et étranges pour ce qui allait devenir Wolf Parade, mais en 2006, Sunset Rubdown était devenu un groupe complet, avec les membres principaux Michael Doerksen, Jordan Robson-Cramer et Camilla Wynne rejoignent Krug sur scène et en studio. En 2009, le groupe avait sorti trois albums acclamés par la critique, Shut Up I Am Dreaming, Random Spirit Lover et (avec l’ajout de Mark Nicol à la basse) Dragon Slayer. Sunset Rubdown a fait de nombreuses tournées à travers l’Amérique du Nord, l’Europe et le Japon, avant de se séparer discrètement après leur dernier spectacle à Tokyo, fin 2009, avant de se réunir en 2023.
Twenty years ago Spencer Krug began using the name Sunset Rubdown for his solo bedroom recordings, experiments too low-fi and odd for what was then a blossoming Wolf Parade, but by 2006 Sunset Rubdown had evolved into a full band, with core members Michael Doerksen, Jordan Robson-Cramer, and Camilla Wynne joining Krug on the stage and in the studio. By 2009 the band had released three critically acclaimed albums, Shut Up I Am Dreaming, Random Spirit Lover, and (with the addition of Mark Nicol on bass) Dragon Slayer. Sunset Rubdown toured extensively across North America, Europe, and Japan, before quietly disbanding after their final show in Tokyo, late 2009, and then reuniting to take the stage in 2023.

Sister Ray, le projet de l’auteur.e-compositeur.trice-interprète Ella Coyes, originaire d’Edmonton, est né d’une nécessité ; un véhicule conçu par lui.elle-même pour examiner les traumatismes avec une honnêteté sans faille. Armé.e d’une voix qui s’élève et s’écorche à parts égales, Coyes transforme des souvenirs à la première personne d’un amour grand et compliqué en allégories universellement puissantes. Élevé.e dans les vastes prairies du comté de Sturgeon, la musique de Sister Ray est imprégnée d’un large éventail d’influences culturelles. Alors que le gospel bluegrass et la country des années 90 ont marqué sa jeunesse, c’est la musique traditionnelle métisse jouée à la maison qui l’a non seulement rapproché.e de son patrimoine, mais qui lui a aussi enseigné une forme de narration ancrée dans la valeur collective, la résilience et la sécurité.
Sister Ray, the project of Edmonton-born songwriter Ella Coyes, was conceived out of necessity; a self-designed vehicle built to examine trauma with unflinching honesty. Armed with a voice that soars and scrapes in equal measure, Coyes converts first-person recollections of big, complicated love into universally potent allegories. Raised on the expansive prairies of Sturgeon County, Sister Ray’s music is steeped in a wide range of cultural influences. With gospel bluegrass and 90’s country playing in the background of their youth, it was the traditional Métis music played at home that not only brought them closer to their heritage, but taught them a form of storytelling rooted in collective value, resilience, and safety.
