Bumaranga’s music is like a festive party, an invitation to gently surrender yourself to their Afro-

Columbian melodies, at times mellow, other times thrilling but always sublimely heartfelt. A blending of Indigenous rhythms and those carried over from Africa by people who were enslaved—cumbia, puya, tambora and malapé were all brought to the fore when the group won the 2013 Syli d’or de la musique du monde. Their music puts the spotlight on traditional instruments such as the tambora and alegre drums, the gaita and Millo flutes, which, along with the singer’s powerful and lively voice, are amplified with the use of drums and electronic instruments. The group has a kind of seductively undisciplined side to them, very danceable and very, very, exciting.

Grim Streaker

Friday night will see delirious Brooklyn art punk ensemble Grim Streaker play a first concert in Montreal since the release of the ‘MIND’ EP. It will also see frenetic frontwoman Amelia Bushell spit a little poetic acid in her future city of residence, while the bunch performs discordant titles that travel from post-hardcore all the way into post-disco.

Holy Fuck

Closing Friday’s festivities, we have praised Toronto-based project Holy Fuck, an absolute feat of strength in terms of boundary-pushing electronic rock music nestled in psychedelia. Known for their polymorphic and vertiginous ear worms, the three-piece brings along a selection of sonic bombs from their latest release ‘Deleter’ (via Last Gang Records), as well as from their previous four album since forming in 2004.

Evan Stephens Hall is big on multiple meanings. The leader of Pinegrove titled their sixth album 11:11 because of its layered significance: the numerals gesturing to a row of trees, or striped corduroy; the cornfields of upstate New York, or people shoulder-to-shoulder.

The album sees the band build on their poetic blend of indie rock, folk, and alt-country, along with Hall’s earnest, open-hearted vocals and his penchant for writing emotionally direct, literate, introspective lyrics. Here, political and socially conscious themes permeate, and as he evolves as an artist, his resolve has only grown stronger – and more purposeful.

“Samba isn’t something you can learn at school. You’ve got to feel it throughout your body and let it take over.” This is from Fabiana Cozza who nevertheless has a degree in journalism. Hailed these past twenty years as one of the most fascinating and charismatic contemporary Brazilian singers, Fabiana Cozza lends her warm, deep voice to this lively yet often melancholic musical style, which she has enriched through her research into her own African roots, a trail which has led her to the indigenous regions of Bahia, Cape Verde, the Congo and Angola.

This intimate moment will be followed by the performance of the unavoidable Brazilian DJs of the Tupi Collective and of Tati Garrafa.

Speaking of his busking, Kenzow once told the Montreal Gazette, “I think people like it because it’s new, you know? Because it’s something they don’t hear anytime (…) they want something fresh, that’s what I’m bringing to the street,” as he explained the difference of West African guitar style. With disarming authenticity, the young singer-songwriter and self-taught musician, and son of the celebrated late filmmaker Idrissa Ouedraogo, is always ready to tackle any new musical experience. Winner of the 2019 Bronze Syli de bronze de la musique du monde award, Kenzow plays a moving, reggae-inspired African pop with an urban feel.

While Ryan Patterson, the singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer behind Fotocrime, often sings in an intimately whispered baritone, he stands in stark contrast to the laconic troubadour role typically associated with his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Patterson has spent over two-and-a-half decades adding to the town’s legacy with his impassioned and activist-minded approach to music, his distinctive work as a graphic artist, and his contributions to nearly every aspect of creative underground culture. After his time fronting forward-thinking art-inflected punk bands, Patterson looked to the urban centers of London, New York, and Berlin for new sonic inspiration, drawing from the passion of his roots while tapping into the sounds of classic EBM and post-punk artists for Fotocrime.

The Francbâtards’ music is “part of the roots and reggae scene, organic and alterglobalist, delivered in several languages, especially the language of the heart and soul,” (Daily Rock, 2020, about their album Karné). Reminiscent of the boisterous era of the Colocs, Loco Locass and La Chango Family, the Francbâtards interweave the rich rhythms from French-speaking countries throughout the world, including Québec, Réunion, France and Mauritius. Using ska, reggae, rap, world, funk and punk, the band shakes things up with a kind of joyful madness, getting their listeners moving and thinking by showing them the beauty of diversity in a brilliant, festive and uncomplicated way.

“The musical sensations are many, with amazing vocals, breathtaking bass solos, and a psychedelic whirlwind of sounds to great effect” (La Nouvelle République, 2021). Former member of Zap Mama, one of the most iconic all-female groups of the African music scene, Manou Gallo is an accomplished musician, breaking with conventions by playing bass like you would a percussion instrument. Dubbed the Queen of Afro-groove, she pushes past the boundaries between musical genres, interweaving traditional rhythms with Afrobeat, rock, jazz, blues and funk. “Everything is possible,” she said. with a nod to the late great musicians who had shown her the way, notably the late Manu Dibango and Fela Kuti.

Born of many traditions, Balkan music is rich, festive, swirling and intoxicating. This music carries with it a fierce thirst, an almost desperate desire to exist and simply enjoy life. The frenzied and irresistible brass section—very present—lets loose while stringed instruments have a hypnotizing effect. A fusion of Mediterranean and Eastern European rhythms, Pulkes Band, which formed in 2017, captures the essence of world music by creating a groove that you just can’t ignore—a bohemian style of music in which Arab, Andalusian, Turkish, Greek, Bulgarian, Jewish traditions all come together.
