OSM : Schubert selon Herreweghe

Between Mendelssohn and Schubert, a dialogue across time—a genius saluting another. A devoted admirer of Schubert, Mendelssohn was among the first to recognize the greatness of his music and bring it to light. Under Philippe Herreweghe’s sensitive and luminous direction, this concert pays tribute to that artistic kinship. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, a masterpiece of elegance and lyrical inspiration, opens the evening in brilliant fashion. Then Schubert’s Symphony no. 9, “The Great”—which Mendelssohn helped unveil after the composer’s death—unfolds in all its radiant power. A journey where admiration becomes music, where the passion of a conductor and orchestra revives the dream of friendship between two kindred spirits.

Estelle Schorpp & charline dally — dreamachine
JS Baillat & Mateo Murphy — Dissemblance

Play 1 brings together three audiovisual performances that explore different ways of looking, perceiving, and letting oneself be absorbed by image.
Between live-manipulated video, feedback systems, analog projections, and lasers, this program moves from contemplative states to more tense and hypnotic forms. Trains filmed and transformed into shifting landscapes, an eye caught in a feedback loop of sound and image, black-and-white compositions that play with light and perception: each project develops its own relationship with time, attention, and immersion.
The whole program builds a progression between drift, fixation, and suspension, in an approach where the visual setup remains firmly at the center of the experience.
Estelle Schorpp & charline dally — dreamachine
Born from the collaboration between sound artist Estelle Schorpp and video artist charline dally, dreamachine simulates the drifting sensation of gazing out a train window. Built from archival footage recorded on DV cassettes aboard the Shinkansen and Hong Kong railways, the piece folds together fluid landscapes of analog video feedback, field recordings and shimmering drone textures modulated by algorithmic process, suspending audiences between motion and reverie.
JS Baillat & Mateo Murphy — Dissemblance
JS Baillat & Mateo Murphy premiere Dissemblance, an immersive audiovisual performance shaped by opposing forces. Tension brushes with stillness, harmony drifts into dissonance, and analog textures merge with digital forms within a grainy black-and-white panorama of desert expanses, shifting sand, weathered rock, and abstract geometries.
pliq — Fixate
In the uneasy space between vulnerability and control, pliq’s Fixate navigates the cognitive slide from fascination to obsession. A projected eye entangled in a feedback loop of sound, gesture, and image becomes an investigative site; a tightrope walk where the gaze risks corroding into something objectifying and dominating.

Festival international Nuits d’Afrique : Mestizo à l’esplanade Tranquille

Pretty much everyone can recognize, from the first few bars, the famous melody of “El Cóndor Pasa,” which was composed at the start of the 20th century by Daniel Alomía Rob and has since been covered thousands of times, most notably by Simon & Garfunkel. It is into this world that Mestizo takes us—the world of Andean popular culture, which is rooted in the festive music of pre-Columbian times. Inspired by neo-folk groups such as Los Kjarkas and Illapu, Mestizo skillfully blends the classic wind and string instruments to carry irresistible traditional rhythms like Saya, Huayno, Sanjuanito, Tinku, Cueca, Carnavalito and Trote.

“Boubé follows in the footsteps of several other Tuareg musicians who have emerged over the past 25 years, such as Tinariwen, Etran de l’Aïr, Imarhan, Bombino and Mdou Moctar,” (La Presse, 2025). The magnetic rhythms of his desert blues powerfully resonate with the sun-drenched spirit of Saharan nomads and the Tamasheq assouf; a repetitive, direct, and unpretentious groove, shaped by peace, travel and freedom, and carried by blazing guitars, hypnotic percussion and a deep, captivating voice. It’s like experiencing a gentle breeze shifting between soothing moments and the vibes of rock. Boubé’s latest album, Voyager (Disques Nuits d’Afrique, 2025), showcases the unique style of this charismatic guitarist and accomplished drummer.

Festival international Nuits d’Afrique : Joyce N’Sana à l’esplanade Tranquille

It’s Joyce N’sana’s stage presence that first catches your attention. Strong, compelling and captivating, she leaves no one indifferent. But it is her powerful voice, with its soulful inflections, that defines her highly charged performances bursting with reggae, gospel, Afrobeat, R&B, hip-hop, jazz and Afro-blues. All these influences come together in a musical universe steeped in Congolese traditions, which she calls Afrobluehop. This Révélation Radio-Canada 2021–2022, who has experienced civil war first-hand, sings in French, English, Lingala, and Lari to exorcise the dark chapters of her country’s history, with luminous, vibrant music that conveys a message of peace, love and harmony. aria — a fine line between crises and opportunity
DJ set surprise

Presented for free at Esplanade Tranquille, the Expérience series features live performances for all audiences.
Designed as a space for exploration and exchange across different strands of electronic music, it brings together ambient, techno, bass music, electronica, and hybrid forms that blend instruments, voices, and machines.
Each evening wraps up with a surprise DJ set, extending the experience into a shared, dance-focused atmosphere.
aria — a fine line between crises and opportunity
aria (aka Dan Driscoll) explores sonic resilience in a fine line between crises and opportunity, a jungle and dub-rooted live performance shaped during his recovery from leg amputation. Fusing deep bass, analog FX, breakbeats, and mass media fragments, he transforms personal adversity into textured soundscapes inspired by dub traditions and the noise of disinformation in our modern world.
SURPRISE PERFORMANCE
ArtSaves
With a sampler and synthesizer at hand, Iranian experimental musician ArtSaves unfurls a slow-forming collage of fragmented dance rhythms and dissolving ambient textures. Instability, timing drift, and error are embraced as generative forces here, used to navigate concepts of identity, authenticity, and the shifting notion of home.
Matt & Mark Thibideau
Toronto’s Matt & Mark Thibideau hit the Expérience stage with a hypnotic blend of upbeat dubby techno and precise, minimal textures crafted live on revamped hardware. Working with drum machines, synthesizers, and samplers, they deliver a continuous flow of velvety grooves and warm ambiance built for late nights on the dancefloor and easy retreat from the outside world.
Vivian Li
Vivian Li’s live set transforms the sounds of archival recordings and pulses of hardware synthesizers into shimmering ribbons of ASMR-like textures and heart-reaching melodies. Layered drones and eerie harmonies come together in real time in her gentle ambient atmosphere shaped by space and time.

It would be impossible to describe Montreal’s West African music scene—or celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nuits d’Afrique—without talking about Aboulaye Koné, one of its most prolific and charismatic figures. Now we can add his sons to the list as well! Having matured into talented multi-instrumentalists in their own right, Taïrou, Lou-Gaël and Aboubacar. A perfectly natural thing to do when you belong to the griot tradition of carrying on the legacy from one generation to the next! Together, they sow the seeds of the baobab tree wherever they go, sharing Mandinka traditions, their deep roots, the richness of their customs and the wisdom of their teachings to audiences of all ages. With percussion and Mandinka guitar, Koné Kan puts its virtuosity at the service of its impressive musical heritage.
