Additional Information
American cellist John-Henry Crawford will be coming to Montreal for a chamber music concert dedicated to the great Piatigorsky, on June 11 at Bourgie Hall. We caught up with him to talk about the concert and his career.
PANM360: You are a recognized musician, what place does chamber music occupy in your career?
JHC: Chamber music is special because the same piece, played with different people, can acquire new light. The magic of chamber music is precisely this unity of voices put together, this fusion of many voices into one.
PANM360: How do you feel about playing in Montreal, a city of great importance in the international classical music scene?
JHC: This is the first time in the city for me, and I am very excited about it. I am happy to be able to share music with excellent local musicians, and in a city where culture is deeply present in the lives of citizens.
PANM360: What is the relationship between Piatigorsky, to whom the concert is dedicated, and the program you will present at the Salle Bourgie?
JHC: It’s more of a relationship in terms of repertoire and artists. In particular, we will play a piece written by Piatigorsky himself, the Paganini Variations, each dedicated to a different friend, and we are talking about the most important musicians of the last century.
PANM360: In closing, as your career is on the rise, what are the projects you want to share with us?
JHC: In the near future I will continue to travel and play and I would also like to start a festival in Louisiana. As for recording projects, an EP with transcriptions of Ravel for cello has just been released to which I am very attached.
