C’est ça

· by Christine Fortier

After the release of the Laser Shark EP in 2016, the urban troubadours from Quebec City took a one-year break before returning to writing. During that time, the quintet put aside the rock ’n’ roll lifestyle, but didn’t lose their sense of humour or their capacity for catchy melodies. Since their debut in 2007, Dance Laury Dance have followed in the footsteps of AC/DC and Motörhead (check “Mort à la gamique” and “Le magicien”). This is even more evident on the 12 tracks of C’est ça, especially through guitarist Philippe Lemire’s ridiculously catchy solos  (“Demi Smoke”, “B.R.U.H.”). As long as we’re making comparisons, let’s bring in The Darkness and Airbourne (also very influenced by AC/DC) for the crazy side of the lyrics and the punk attitude of the musicians.

For their first full-length album since Hellalujah (2014), Dance Laury Dance have chosen French to tell their party stories and other nonsensical tales. The song “Né pour parde”, a tribute to Motörhead singer Lemmy Kilmister and his song “Born to Lose” from The Wörld Is Yours (2010), is a very good example of a winning combination for the band. On the one hand, the lyrics make you smile and on the other, the music makes you nod your head. We couldn’t ask for more.
