Ana Tijoux – Vida

· by Michel Labrecque

Latin America and the entire Spanish-speaking sphere will be happy: rapper Ana Tijoux is releasing her first full album in ten years.

Vida (Life) is a complex creation, which combines popular music and a multiplicity of influences, as well as swag, happiness and feminist political reflection. Ana Tijoux celebrates both life and the end of the world. The last piece is called Fin del Mundo.

With her producer, Chilean multi-instrumentalist Andrés Celis, Ana Tijoux creates deeply original hip-hop full of Latin American influences. And it’s not just rap. Sometimes she just sings accompanied by an echoing piano or nature sounds.

Ana Tijoux was born in France, to parents exiled from Chile because of the infamous dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. From 1993, her life was made up of trips back and forth between France and Chile. She now lives in Barcelona, Catalonia.

But her entire solo career is undoubtedly Spanish-speaking and South American. And politically engaged.

Between her previous album, Vengo, 2014 and Vida, she released multiple singles in support of the Chilean social movement against economic inequality between 2019 and 2021.

On Vida, it’s about migration, the impact of dictatorships, the future of women, war, pollution. But it is also about happiness, hope and laughter.

At 46, Ana Tijoux is maturing and gaining depth. And why not get involved, think, but also have fun dancing and living… your vida. Fully.

Don’t understand Spanish? You will still enjoy it as you love the Spanish singer and composer Rosalia.
