Jake Xerxes Fussell au Ritz PDB

Le chanteur et guitariste de Caroline du Nord, Jake Xerxes Fussell, apporte une voix unique à la musique folk traditionnelle, l’interprétant avec une sincérité rafraîchissante qui n’est ni passéiste ni moderniste. Au cours de sa première décennie en tant qu’artiste, il a tracé sa propre voie musicale, souvent avec l’aide de collaborateurs intéressants et compatissants. Son premier album éponyme, produit par William Tyler, a permis aux auditeurs de découvrir son jeu de fingerstyle distinctif et son approche détendue des chansons traditionnelles de blues et de folk américain. Au fil des années, le son de Fussell a évolué avec des albums comme What in the Natural World (2017) et Out of Sight (2019), révélant une approche singulière empreinte de douce malice et de jeu inventif. Travaillant avec le producteur James Elkington, son quatrième album, Good and Green Again (2022), fut le premier à inclure des compositions originales. Après avoir quitté le label Paradise of Bachelors pour Fat Possum, Fussell a de nouveau collaboré avec Elkington pour When I’m Called, sorti en 2024.

North Carolina singer and guitarist Jake Xerxes Fussell brings a unique voice to traditional folk music, interpreting it with a refreshing candor that is neither throwback, nor modernist. During his first decade as a recording artist, he has created his own musical lane, often with the help of interesting and sympathetic collaborators. His eponymous William Tyler-produced debut introduced fans to his distinctive fingerstyle playing and laid-back take on traditional American blues and folk songs. Over the coming years, Fussell’s sound evolved with albums like What in the Natural World (2017) and Out of Sight (2019) revealing an idiosyncratic approach full of gentle mirth and inventive playing. Working with producer James Elkington, his fourth album, 2022’s Good and Green Again, was the first to feature any original compositions. After switching from longtime label Paradise of Bachelors to Fat Possum, Fussell teamed up with Elkington again for 2024’s When I’m Called.

Bien que leurs travaux indépendants diffèrent, la ligne d’influence peut être entendue à travers le catalogue de JS, et à travers leur choix de disques dans le club.

Jump Source – composed of Priori and Patrick Holland – venture through various strains of dance music in the studio, focusing on intuitive longform recordings full of quirks. Though their independent work differs, the throughline of influence can be heard across the JS catalogue, and through their choice of records in the club.

The Weeknd est le pseudonyme d’Abel Tesfaye, un artiste passé du statut d’énigme à celui de superstar, racontant ses excès émotionnels et physiques à travers des ballades de R&B alternatif sombre et des morceaux électro-pop fluorescents. Le chanteur et auteur-compositeur a émergé de Toronto en 2011 avec trois mixtapes qui, à première vue, ne semblaient pas destinées au grand public. Pourtant, en seulement quelques années, Tesfaye a enchaîné les succès pop dans le Top 10, faisant connaître son timbre plaintif à l’échelle mondiale. The Weeknd is the alias of Abel Tesfaye, an enigma turned superstar whose accounts of emotionally and physically toxic indulgences are related through morose alternative R&B ballads and fluorescent electro-pop throwbacks alike. The singer and songwriter rose out of Toronto in 2011 with three mixtapes that seemed to have no designs on mainstream appeal. Within only a few years, however, Tesfaye had scored a variety of Top Ten pop hits that made his aching tenor known on a global level. These included a duet with Ariana Grande (« Love Me Harder »), a dramatic ballad from the soundtrack of Fifty Shades of Grey (the Grammy-winning « Earned It »), a disco-funk collaboration with Max Martin (« I Can’t Feel My Face »), and a sleek Daft Punk production (« Starboy »). Additionally, Tesfaye topped album charts at home and abroad and collected more Grammys with his second and third proper albums, Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) and Starboy (2016). Playboi Carti

Le rappeur d’Atlanta Playboi Carti est connu pour son flow répétitif et accrocheur, mêlant agressivité et espièglerie. Il s’est fait remarquer au milieu des années 2010 en tant qu’affilié de l’A$AP Mob et, après une série de singles viraux, a placé son premier véritable album, Die Lit (2018), dans le Top 10 du Billboard 200. Carti a ensuite entamé une nouvelle phase artistique avec Whole Lotta Red (2020), un album plus audacieux et provocateur qui s’est hissé en tête des classements. Avant la sortie de son troisième album, I Am Music (2025), plusieurs morceaux ont fuité, marquant des changements de direction artistique. Il a finalement dévoilé All Red, un single percutant et abrasif, annonçant cette nouvelle ère musicale.

Atlanta rapper Playboi Carti is known for a repetitive and catchy flow that he fills with a mix of aggression and playfulness. He gained recognition in the mid-2010s as an affiliate of A$AP Mob, and after a steady succession of viral singles, he put his first proper album, 2018’s Die Lit, in the Top Ten of the Billboard 200. Carti moved into a new phase of his artistry with the riskier, more antagonistic, and ultimately chart-topping Whole Lotta Red in 2020. Leaked tracks, changes in creative direction, and the jagged single « All Red » preceded the 2025 release of his third album, I Am Music.

Le fougueux, attachant et charismatique auteur, compositeur et interprète, lauréat du Syli d’argent de la musique du monde en 2024, ondoie entre mélodies méditatives et rock indomptable, à la guitare, acoustique et électrique, aux percussions et à la batterie.

“Fille d’un des plus célèbres griots ouest-africains et épouse de la nouvelle star de la soul guinéenne, Manamba Kanté est surtout une chanteuse hors pair et une self-made-woman” (Jeune Afrique, 2018). Oui, elle est la fille de Mory Kanté. Oui, elle est mariée avec Soul Bang’s. Mais ce n’est certainement pas ce qui détermine son succès. Dans les faits, Manamba Kanté est sans conteste l’étoile montante de la musique mandingue. Celle qui a toujours voulu chanter peut compter sur une voix capable de se faire feutrée comme de gravir des sommets. Classée parmi les dix finalistes des prix Découvertes RFI en 2020, la griotte malinké se meut avec aisance dans les traditions ouest-africaines. Elle vient tout juste de sortir son second album, Mousso.

BIC est l’acronyme de brain, intelligence, creativity (cerveau, intelligence, créativité). Maître des mots, BIC Tizon Dife pose avec délice et emphase ses phrasés hip hop sur des beats issus tout droit de son pays. Depuis plus de 25 ans, ce guitariste, chanteur et compositeur, figure importante de la scène culturelle de son pays et ex ambassadeur de bonne volonté de l’Unicef, prend un ton parfois léger, parfois conscientisé, toujours sans langue de bois, pour parler du quotidien, de l’amour, des défis sociaux.

BIC stands for “brain, intelligence, creativity.” A master wordsmith, BIC Tizon Dife lays his hip hop phrasing over beats straight out of Haiti. For over 25 years, this guitarist, singer-songwriter and former Unicef Goodwill Ambassador has been an important figure in his country’s cultural scene. Sometimes he adopts a light-hearted tone, other times he’s more serious, but he is always sincere as he speaks of everyday life, love and social challenges.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Boulila Gnawa-rock avec Mourad Kebali au Balattou

Le gnawa. Un rite, une musique, des danses. Un art inscrit au patrimoine culturel immatériel de l’humanité de l’Unesco. La mémoire ancestrale, mystique, d’une ascendance d’Afrique sub-saharienne. Profondément ancrée dans la tradition, portée par les vibrations graves des cordes du guembri et le son claquant des karkabous, amplifiée par des répétitions entêtantes, ferment d’une transe libératrice, la musique de Boulila, lauréat des Syli d’or de la musique du monde 2021, renouvelle les codes de ce genre à la fois festif et thérapeutique par une instrumentation alliant guitare, saxophone, basse, piano et batterie, révélant l’africanité des musiques populaires occidentales.
La versatilité des rythmes marocains sera à l’honneur de ces trois soirées étoilées où Boulila jammera avec trois émissaires de la scène montréalaise.
Soirée gnawa-rock | avec Mourad Kebali: Avec ses allures de vieux routier du rock qui en a vu d’autres, Mourad Kebali crée un blues-rock lancinant, ponctué de vibratos et de longs accords de guitare distordus que ne renierait pas Santana. Une invitation à fermer les yeux et à se laisser porter par la musique en battant le tempo.

Gnawa. Ritual, music, dance. This artistic form of expression, inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, stems from a distant and mystical cultural memory rooted in sub-Saharan Africa. Boulila’s music is strongly grounded in tradition, carried by the low vibrations of the guembri’s strings and the clinking of the krakebs, and is amplified by intoxicating repetition and the ferment of a liberating trance. Winners of the 2021 Syli d’or de la musique du monde, the group revisits the conventions of this festive and therapeutic musical genre with instrumentation that combines guitar, saxophone, bass, piano and drums, exposing the African roots of popular Western music.
The versatility of Moroccan rhythms will be the focus of these three star-studded evenings, as Boulila jams with three emissaries from the Montreal scene.
Gnawa-rock evening | with Mourad Kebali: Looking like a rock veteran who’s seen it all before, Mourad Kebali creates a haunting blues-rock sound, punctuated by vibratos and long, distorted guitar chords that Santana wouldn’t disavow. An invitation to close your eyes and let yourself be carried away by the music, beating out the tempo.

Festival International Nuits d’Afrique : Orchestre Chaabi de Montréal à la scène Loto-Québec

“Ici, Alger résonne. Ici, Alger vit. Les notes, comme des plaintes déchirantes, évoquent une beauté nostalgique” (laconverse.com, 2023). Le châabi, c’est le “jazz de la casbah”. À l’opposé des musiques savantes, il ne s’écrit pas, il se transmet de maître en maître, par voie orale. Il raconte l’amitié, l’amour, les préoccupations quotidiennes. Mandole, banjo, violon, guitare, mandoline, piano, oud, derbouka, tar: depuis 2017, la vingtaine de musiciens et de choristes de l’OCM se déploie en grand, en coeur et avec coeur pour faire résonner tout l’héritage populaire arabe et kabyle d’Algérie. De El Hachemi Guerouabi à Amar Ezzahi, Dahmane El Harrach, Lounis Aït Menguellet ou encore Lounès Matoub, le répertoire de cet orchestre auquel on s’abandonne révèle la beauté de ce rythme passionné, à la croisée de la poésie maghrébine et de la musique arabo-andalouse.

“Here, Algiers resonates. Here, Algiers lives. The notes, like heartbreaking complaints, evoke nostalgic beauty” (La Converse, 2023). Chaâbi is kasbah jazz; unlike art music, it is not written down but rather passed down orally from one chaâbi master to another. It conveys friendship, love and everyday concerns. Algerian mandole, banjo, violine, guitar, mandolin, oud, tar, piano, darbouka… Since 2017, the twenty or so musicians and choir members of the Orchestre Chaâbi de Montréal (OCM) have been performing in harmony in order to share Algeria’s Arab and Kabyle folk heritage. From El Hachemi Guerouabi to Amar Ezzahi, Dahmane El Harrachi, Lounis Aït Menguellet, or Lounès Matoub, the OCM’s repertoire reveals the passion of this beautiful tradition that brings together Maghrebian poetry and Andalusi-Arabic music.
