Mark Kozelek, leader and only permanent member of Sun Kil Moon, has adopted a novel approach to his narrative framework on Benji. The digressions in his dense and unfiltered lyrics have multiplied, moving closer to automatic writing. He evokes great compassion for his close ones, whether they are sick, aging or afflicted by the loss of a loved one. Since then, Kozelek has continued in this direction, increasingly in avoidance of traditional song structures. However, he has never done it with as much empathy as on this great record.
