Additional Information
In 2023, the trumpeter Jacques Kuba Seguin embarked on a unique project in Canadian music. His Trilogy of Scents, based on the three stages of a perfume’s life, is part of an allegorical approach that draws comparisons between human life and the lives of olfactory creations: youth, adulthood, and old age, like aromatic allegories. Musically, the initial stage evoked in the album Parfum No. 1 (and associated with the top notes, those that appear immediately but also last the least, between 30 and 120 minutes), lively like childhood, was supported by a quintet. Parfum No. 2, associated with heart notes (those that constitute the signature of the perfume and last a few hours longer), was carried by a big band, complex as adulthood. This time, Parfum No. 3, the conclusion, paints the sonic portrait of the base notes, those that we keep for much longer and that lead us into old age. This one has earned a whole symphony orchestra in collaboration with the quintet from the first part. A journey rich in meaning and impressions thus concludes with a suite of seven compositions performed by the Trois-Rivières Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alain Trudel, and a quartet lead by Jacques Kuba Seguin. I met with the composer and performer to talk about this adventure that is coming to an end.
