Montréal / Nouvelles Musiques : Notinikew

Une des grandes voix autochtones! La musique d’Andrew Balfour, compositeur d’origine crie, est au cœur de ce concert qui nous emporte dans un émouvant voyage spirituel. Ses œuvres chorales invitent à communier à l’instar de Vision Chant, inspiré d’un style de chant autochtone qui atteint des sommets de tranquillité et d’intensité. Tandis que la puissante complainte de Notinikew, un mini-opéra anti-guerre, fait résonner avec force les mots et les maux d’une communauté de destin trop rarement entendue.

Notinikew raconte l’histoire des soldats autochtones qui ont combattu pour la liberté en Europe pendant la Première Guerre mondiale et qui ont été privés de leurs droits et libertés à leur retour au pays.

One of the great Indigenous voices! The music of Andrew Balfour, a composer of Cree origin, is at the heart of this concert, which takes us on a moving spiritual journey. His choral works invite us to commune, as in Vision Chant, inspired by an Indigenous singing style that reaches the heights of tranquility and intensity. The powerful lament of Notinikew, an anti-war mini-opera, forcefully echoes the words and woes of a community and destiny too rarely heard about.

Notinikew tells the history of Indigenous soldiers who fought for liberty in Europe during the First World War and were denied their rights and freedoms upon their return home.
