Setting aside the nimble polyrhythms and call-and-response vocals common to classic Afrobeat, the Budos Band fit in firmly with the gritty, no-frills funk of Brooklyn’s Daptone camp. They owe a little less than most of the style’s revivalists to Fela Kuti, and a fair bit to Black Sabbath. Track titles like “Rite of the Ancients” and “Nature’s Wrath” hint at the dread and doom delivered by the band’s rugged grooves and ferocious, freight-train brass.
