Musicologist, pianist and organist by training, Montrealer Kara-Lis Coverdale (originally from Hamilton) has haunted Estonian churches with her playing, mastering their sacred repertoire reflected in the hypnotic niche she has created. There, she excels as a composer and producer. Worth noting are her recurring collaborations with the ace Tim Hecker. Created in collaboration with American artist LXV, Sirens was concocted using motifs created on keyboards and more abstract synthetic sounds. Since then, her art has continued to improve, with Coverdale striving to exploit the dichotomy between her classical knowledge and explorations of the digital universe, in other words, “combining extreme natural beauty and extreme confusion, total softness and total noise.”
