Andrew Wells-Oberegger – Déjouer le glas

· by Frédéric Cardin

Déjouer le glas, as in tricking death. Quebec multi-instrumentalist and composer Andrew Wells-Oberegger had to face a serious illness before emerging serene. This is the colour of the generous programme on this album, in which the multiple influences acknowledged by the artist are interwoven with great gentleness and benevolence. From Arabic to Indian music, classical, early Western music, jazz, folk, neo-classical instrumentation and much more besides.

Wells-Oberegger plays oud, guitar, bouzouki, percussion, bansuri (Indian flute), toy piano and more. Her compositions are enriched by a number of guests playing double bass, violin, nyckelharpa, accordion, harmonium, kanun, marimba, etc.

There is no darkness in this album. It’s not a summary of a battle against death, or the emotional rollercoaster that accompanies years of struggle. Déjouer le glas is the conclusion of this confrontation: a story with a happy ending that gives us hope.

If you like the music of the Cordâme ensemble, you’ll be in familiar territory with Déjouer le glas.

Andrew Wells-Oberegger will present Déjouer le glas on 19 November at La Petite Boîte Noire in Sherbrooke, and on 24 November at the Centre culturel St-John in Bromont.
