Djely Tapa – Dankoroba

· by Frédéric Cardin

Djely Tapa takes the Afro-pop scene by storm with Dankoroba, an album built between Montreal, Bamako and Abidjan. The highly polished, Afro-futuristic production is under the watchful eye of Djely herself, and solid producer Jean Massicotte (Arthur H, Patrick Watson, Lhasa de Sela). Massicotte is also responsible for the top-notch electro arrangements, meaning an accompaniment that colors Djely’s African soul, but never overwhelms it. The main word is respect, and the result is stunning. With the added presence (occasionally) of Vieux Farka Touré and Adama Yalomba, as well as the Quatuor Andara (strings), the Chorale Afrika Intshiyetu and Diely Mori Tounkara (kora) from Montreal, and some of Bamako’s finest musicians on n’goni, n’goni bah and guitar, Dankoroba presents itself as a calling card that could open the doors of the international scene wide for Djely (or, that is, wider than at present). It certainly deserves to.

Dankoroba is simply excellent.

Le lancement de l’album se fera en grande pompe le samedi 19 octobre au National
