Kamra – Shift Circuit

· by Frédéric Cardin

The Chitlin’ Circuit was a network of concert venues frequented by black artists in the United States during the era of racial segregation, from the 1930s to 1960s. Shift Circuit is a contemporary take on it by artist Kamra, who infuses it with a queer character that they invite to blossom through a program of erotic texts set to music by themselves. The artist, who divides their time between the Catskills (in New York state) and Toronto, Canada, offers a beautifully inventive universe that ironically evokes the Montreal indie scene much more than its rival city’s. In terms of character and artistic spirit, one thinks a little of Erika Angell/Thus Owls, Braids, Thanya Iyer and perhaps Marthe Halvorsen. There’s a rich indie scene in Toronto, of course, but the city’s personality doesn’t bear the hallmark of it, unlike Montreal. That said, Kamra’s brand of musical Soul-Food is a happy blend of heady blues flavours, refreshing pop, folk fusion and emulsified soul. Add a discreet topping of electro and a little dreamy indie and the feast is complete.

It’s easy to imagine the artist treating music lovers to an evening at the Sala Rossa here in Montreal. The invitation is extended! If you’re in Toronto, don’t miss her concerts.
