Born out of the indie folk movement, a gradually convert to electro, contemporary Western classical, traditional music and choral song, the prolific Sufjan Stevens has proved to be the most innovative artist in his musical dimension, not to say the most brilliant. Inspired by the apocalyptic and Afro-futurist works of schizophrenic outsider artist Royal Robertson (1936-1997), The Age of Adz remains an absolute masterpiece of composition in the service of the songwriting form, achieving the perfect balance between songcraft, composition and arrangements. There are very few collections of songs with a high melodic content, carried by such orchestration, of such complexity and conceptual depth.
