A conceptual approach, torpid rhythms, minimalism and abstraction, all signs observable at the outset with Suuns… before the rock attitude, sensuality and fine-point poetry bloom amid this apparent austerity. A magnificent amalgam is revealed: guitars, synths, machines, drums, plaintive vocals, lascivious inflections, consonant sentences linking sacred writings and tales of the pleasures of the flesh. Formerly Steve Albini’s assistant, Texan John Congleton had produced and mixed a lot of folks, from Swans to St. Vincent, before inviting these Montreal musicians to his Texas studio, resulting in a flagship album of avant-rock.
