She embodies the distant past of a traditional society, she carries within herself its colonialist fractures, its challenges and hopes for the present, she imagines its sensual dives into the future. Should Tanya Tagaq Gillis be considered the Inuk artist par excellence of this concluding decade? Ask the question… Throat singing, contemporary jazz, free improvisation, noise, electroacoustics, hardcore, all these aesthetics are integrated here. An exceptional artist, a shamaness, a woman of instinct and of vision, Tagaq has brought together excellent musicians (Jesse Zubot and Jean Martin) to create this opus that earned her a Polaris Prize. That was before launching Retribution, another excellent album resulting from this momentum.
