Additional Information
Until now, Montreal had two clubs exclusively dedicated to jazz: the more than respectable Dièse Onze and Upstairs (to which a third name can be added, La Maison du Jazz, in Laval). Here comes a new kid on the block, L’Entracte Cabaret Jazz. Confirming the “Jazz City” stature of Montreal (I’ve been saying for a long time that there is room in the Metropolis for at least one other full-time club), L’Entracte has made its home in the heart of downtown: corner of Sainte-Catherine and Peel (1112 Sainte-Catherine West, to be precise). What is especially encouraging is that the project is being carried out by a group of passionate young people (also musicians), most of whom studied at McGill. For the moment, the club is open four nights a week, from Thursday to Sunday, although the goal is inevitably to offer shows seven nights a week. A prime spot is offered to young artists, L’Entracte wishing to become a hub for the graduating cohorts of various Montreal schools, while carefully and regularly weaving connections with veterans of the scene (Kevin Dean is an important supporter of the project).
I met with two of the brave young people (because nothing is simple in setting up a place like this) to talk about their vision and their passion.
And then, a significant bonus for some aficionados of the thing: L’Entracte has its own Hammond B-3 organ! Which means that all ears even slightly excited by this instrument (including mine) will have a weekly appointment (on Sundays) to indulge abundantly in the groovy and funky sounds of the device.
