Hand Habits, le projet de Meg Duffy (iel), musicien•ne basé•e à Los Angeles, a récemment sorti son nouvel album, Fun House – le plus ambitieux des albums de Hand Habits à ce jour. Produit par Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) et conçu par Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), l’album n’a pas été conçu en réaction à la pandémie, mais suite à un moment de pause difficile, bien que nécessaire. Encouragé•e par la thérapie et incité•e par son producteur à donner aux chansons des formes nouvelles et inattendues, le résultat est plus personnel et plus aventureux que tout ce qu’on aura entendu de Hand Habits auparavant. Le mélange des styles, associé à des chansons qui se déplacent habilement entre le présent et le passé, donne à l’album une diversité sauvage, une qualité de miroirs, comme son nom l’indique. Alors que les précédents disques de Hand Habits pouvaient être assez insulaires, Fun House est bouillonnant, luxuriant : une conversation pleinement réalisée.

Hand Habits, the project of Los Angeles-based musician Meg Duffy (they/them), recently released their new album Fun House – the most ambitious Hand Habits album to date. Produced by Sasami Ashworth (SASAMI) and engineered by Kyle Thomas (King Tuff), the record was not intended as a reaction to the pandemic, but it was very much the result of taking a difficult, if much-needed, moment of pause. Emboldened by going into therapy and coaxed by Ashworth to push the songs into unexpected new shapes, the resulting music is more acutely personal and stylistically adventurous than anything you’ve heard from Hand Habits before. The push/pull of styles, paired with songs that move deftly between the present and past, give the record a wildly diverse, hall of mirrors quality that befits its name. Where previous Hand Habits records could be fairly insular affairs, Fun House feels ebullient, lush, a fully-realized conversation.

Thanya Iyer; auteure-compositrice-interprète énigmatique au son effervescent avec des accents expérimentaux et pop. Son groupe en spectacle (Pompey, Daniel Gélinas, Emilie Kahn) tisse une toile sonore au teintes autant électroniques qu’acoustiques de façon à entrainer le public dans un état de sérénité où la compassion et un sentiment spirituel semblent se manifester d’eux-mêmes. La groupe a joué toute autour Turtle Island en première partie d’artistes tels que Julia Holter, Land of Talk, Kimya Dawson, Reverend Kristin Michael Hayter, Jeff Parker, et Kevin Drew. Suite à leur deuxième album visuel, “KIND” (2020), qui figurait sur la longue liste du Prix Polaris, le nouveau disque du groupe, TIDE/TIED (Topshelf Records), explore les rythmes de l’identité communautaire, de la guérison et de l’amour dans un monde dissonant.

Thanya Iyer is an enigmatic songwriter whose sparkling, experimental pop music embraces mindfulness, aesthetic beauty, and the interconnectedness of all things. Iyer’s 2025 release, TIDE/TIED, expands on the future-folk of their 2020 Polaris long-listed album, KIND. With washes of jazz-inflected pop and ensemble ambience courtesy of Daniel Gélinas’ meditative drumming, Pompey’s adventurous multi-instrumentalism, and the celestial harp of Emilie Kahn, Thanya Iyer builds a layered musical world that Pitchfork described as “a lucid daydream that’s constantly melting at its edges.”

Fashion Club

Fashion Club est le pseudonyme artistique de Pascal Stevenson, une artiste originaire de Los Angeles qui a initialement conçu ce projet alors qu’elle était en tournée avec son groupe Moaning. Écouter le deuxième album autoproduit de Fashion Club, A Love You Cannot Shake, donne l’impression d’être pris dans le feu croisé d’un faisceau de lumière intense. On ne peut s’empêcher de se sentir à la fois revigoré et exposé lorsque ses lignes de synthé aberrantes, ses cordes artistiques et ses guitares déformées s’amplifient en crescendos plus grands que nature, évoquant un projecteur divin mais pénétrant. On peut se prélasser dans la lueur d’une lumière imposante avec une assurance tranquille, mais il y a aussi quelque chose d’intrinsèquement inconfortable dans une source lumineuse imposante : se dévoiler aux spectateurs (et à soi-même) s’accompagne de divers niveaux d’anxiété et de doute de soi. C’est cette tension qui est au cœur de A Love You Cannot Shake, un album à la luminosité luxuriante et à la portée surnaturelle, où chaque morceau fonctionne comme un royaume scintillant et transportant.

Fashion Club is the recording alias of Los Angeles artist Pascal Stevenson, who originally conceived of the project while on tour with her band Moaning. Listening to Fashion Club’s self-produced second album A Love You Cannot Shake feels like being caught in the crossfire of a profound beam of light. You can’t help but feel both enlivened and exposed as its aberrant synth lines, artful strings and disfigured guitars swell into larger-than-life crescendos, which evoke a divine yet probing spotlight. You can bask in the glow of a towering light with self-assured poise, but there’s also something inherently uncomfortable about an imposing light source—revealing yourself to onlookers (and oneself) comes with varying levels of anxiety and self-doubt. This is the tension at the heart of A Love You Cannot Shake, a record of lush radiance and otherworldly scope, with each track functioning as its own twinkling, transportive realm.
