So GY!BE was strictly a ’90s phenomenon? The two six-and-a-half-minute drones and two instrumental frescoes of about 20 minutes each, gathered in this monumental project, and a Polaris Prize to boot, invalidate that perception. A decade of hiatus and then new sound immersions, the spark of a new beginning on stage, and then… the Maple Spring’s red squares and other planetary struggles at their boiling point have really inspired Montreal’s post-rock leaders. The original strengths of the group have been redoubled, more mature compositions and more assured performances heralding a new creative cycle.
