A multidisciplinary artist of Mexican origin based in Montreal, Coyotzin has, over the years, forged a musical style that evokes the pre-Columbian world of his native country, and more specifically, that of the Aztecs. This El Regreso de los Dioses Primigenios (The Return of the Primordial Gods) is in line with previous works. In fact, few details have changed between the early 2000s releases and this new 2025 album. This means that if you like this one, you will also like the others. Or you will end up finding that it lacks evolution. It’s up to you. For my part, even though I know it could happen, I remain under the charm of these rather dreamy and contemplative atmospheres, sometimes more energetic.
On the Bandcamp page of the various albums, no information is provided about the music and the performers. As a result, we assume that the Montrealer is the main, if not the only, musician present. A guttural voice that probably corresponds to the manifestations of mythological gods is associated with cries that evoke the wind (perhaps), a traditional flute seems to carry the ghostly voice of the Aztec people, and percussion gives a bit of rhythm to the whole thing.
Coyotzin’s music is a dive into a dreamlike state, or a trance induced by some shamanic ritual. A blend of magic and spirituality floats in the air of the auditory space thus created.
