Here is an unusual release in the Blue Note brand’s sound catalog. Mercereau (guitars, etc.) and Niño (percussion) are deep-sea divers accustomed to the underground and sonic marginality, while Johnson (saxophones, flute) usually surfs on top of the business with a range of artists, from Miley Cyrus to Meshell Ndegeocello.
The three together, in a trio format augmented with sampling and electro manipulations, guide us into an ambient and dreamlike atmosphere, punctuated with random digital and acoustic eddies. As if in zero gravity, we float, in apparent and total freedom. This kind of musicality is not often frequented by the illustrious record company. Could this then be a sign of a change in direction, or simply an attempt guided by an unlikely editorial spontaneity? Time will tell, but surely, the high quality of the ethereal landscapes (with the exception of Elsewhere, the last track, more dense and paroxysmal than the previous ones) gathered on this disc of just 35 minutes leaves us hoping for more surprising proposals in the future Blue Note calendar.
