There are some common denominators in his deep catalog: he’s a killer guitar player who never misses a chance to shred, but it’s always in the service of his songs, which display his ear for melodic hooks and an openhearted sensitivity. All of this was evident on “But for the Grace of God,” a 2000 single that became the first of many Billboard Country number one hits for Urban, but he sharpened his execution over the course of his career, developing a distinctive ballad style — some of his biggest hits were slow-burners, including “You’ll Think of Me” and “Blue Ain’t Your Color” — which he accentuated with his adept integration of contemporary pop, including collaborations with Pink and Nile Rodgers on his 2020 album The Speed of Now, Vol. 1. Urban’s focus on the now was also evident in how he spent the first part of the 2020s releasing a rapid series of singles and collaborations while taking his time to craft a full-length album. When 2024’s High finally arrived, it included a handful of those singles and the hit “Messed Up as Me.”
