FIMAV: Splendide Abysse

Fri 17 May 2024 • 08:00 pm classique
CARRÉ 150 (Cabaret G. Aubert) - Victoriaville 36$
· by Rédaction PAN M 360

Montreal composer and clarinettist PHILIPPE LAUZIER has assembled a quartet of fantastic musicians with whom he has already worked as a duo: BELINDA CAMPBELL (piano, DX7 synthesizer) and FRÉDÉRIQUE ROY (vocals, accordion), also from Montreal, and percussionist CARLO COSTA, an Italian living in New York. LAUZIER’s unusual language for SPLENDIDE ABYSSE is clearly the result of meticulous timbral explorations with each of his comparses. His compositions, which combine rigorous instrumental preparation and exquisite sensitivity of execution, give the quartet’s sound universe a unique, sparkling, slightly aquatic nature, where every silence is rich in meaning. Within this framework, each instrumentalist is given ample latitude to improvise and, in so doing, bring to life the musical material that LAUZIER has created and refined especially for this group.
