Chromeo – Adult Contemporary

· par Jacob Langlois-Pelletier

Adult Contemporary, the sixth opus from Montreal electro-funk duo Chromeo, couldn’t be better named; Dave 1 and P-Thugg present themselves more mature than ever, without losing their signature playfulness. For almost 20 years, the two men have been on a mission to make funk shine, and this new chapter unequivocally lives up to their quest.

The project opens with “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl”, an excellent, assertive funk and pop track that sets the tone for the rest of the opus. The recipe is the one the duo has become accustomed to over the years: synthesizers, a good bass line and a catchy chorus. In fact, this formula is repeated for the majority of the project, sometimes giving the impression of listening to the same track over and over again (something that will certainly not displease the biggest Chromeo fans).

“A Cut Above”, musically less dense than the others, and “Two of Us (Friendsnlovers, Pt.2)”, an excellent two minutes of P-Thugg having fun with his talkbox, stand out from the crowd. British singer Elly Jackson, better known as La Roux, complements the two protagonists perfectly on “Replacements”, the album’s only collaboration.

Apart from being repetitive at times, Adult Contemporary offers a singular sound with all the elements to make you want to hit the dancefloor. Chromeo will be on stage at MTELUS on October 19 if you’ve been charmed by their latest creation.
