L’Orchestre Symphonique présente Kumt Arayn! Musique klemzer et littérature yiddish

La culture yiddish fait incontestablement partie de l’ADN de la ville de Montréal, terre d’accueil pour des milliers de Juifs dès la fin du XIXe siècle. Sa littérature et sa poésie nous parlent d’un Montréal tour à tour ouvrier, communautaire, inclusif et moderne, gardé par un mont Royal immuable. La lecture de textes en français et en yiddish écrits par des auteurs et autrices comme Jacob-Isaac Segal, Rachel Korn, Ida Maze, Melech Ravitch, Chava Rosenfarb, Léa Roback et Michel Tremblay sera accompagnée de musique klezmer, ce style tantôt introspectif, tantôt endiablé, mais toujours saisissant.

En collaboration avec le Centre Segal des arts de la scène ainsi que l’écrivaine et spécialiste de littérature yiddish Chantal Ringuet.

Yiddish culture is undeniably part of Montreal’s DNA, the city being the adopted home of thousands of Jews, beginning in the late 19th century. Its literature and poetry relate a Montreal that is variously working class, community-based, inclusive, and modern, guarded by the immovable Mount Royal. Readings of texts in French and in Yiddish by authors including Jacob-Isaac Segal, Miriam Waddington, Israel Medrech and Abraham Shulman will be accompanied by klezmer, a style that is alternately wistful and boisterous, though always captivating.

In collaboration with the Segal Centre for Performing Arts as well as the author and Yiddish literature specialist Chantal Ringuet.

The Backseat Lovers is a young indie rock band composed of Jonas Swanson, Joshua Harmon, KJ Ward and Juice Welch. The lens continually refocuses itself on the song—the feelings at hand. The future is waiting with a crooked smile and the photos you’re taking only leave the subjects more and more blurry.

Christian Lee Hutson commence son nouvel album Quitters par un rire. Dans cette suite à son premier album, Beginners, Hutson s’éloigne du thème de la croissance pour se concentrer sur la crainte et les complications de la vieillesse. Le rire qui annonce Quitters est celui que l’on trouve à la fin des films de John Huston, celui de la résignation et de la libération, et en quelque sorte un rire cosmique qui dit « Californie », un endroit où les gens solitaires se rassemblent comme des oiseaux.

Christian Lee Hutson starts his new album Quitters with a laugh. In this follow-up to his debut album, Beginners, Hutson moves away from the focus on growing up to the dread and complications of growing older. The laugh that announces Quitters is the kind you’ll find at the end of John Huston films, one of resignation and release, and somehow a cosmic laugh that says “California,” a place where lonely people gather together like birds.

Mardis Big Band au Dièse Onze – Benjamin Deschamps

Benjamin Deschamps s’est établi comme un incontournable de la scène jazz canadienne avec ses trois premiers albums. Il a présenté sa musique avec succès aux quatre coins du Canada, faisant la tournée de plusieurs festivals de jazz au pays et en France. Il cumule les médiums artistiques : il est flûtiste, clarinettiste et arrangeur, mais ce sont ses talents de saxophoniste et compositeur qui le mettront sur la sellette.

It was through his classical music background that Benjamin Deschamps discovered jazz to finally make it his own. Although he cumulates artistic mediums (he is a flutist, clarinetist and arranger), it is his talents as a saxophonist and composer that have put him in the spotlight.

Sampa the Great à Nuits d’Afrique

“Un mélange vibrant de hip-hop Kalindula et Kwaito, de trap et de création parlée, de Zamrock et de R&B” (The Guardian, 2022). La grande Angélique Kidjo n’a que des éloges pour celle avec qui elle a collaboré à plusieurs reprises, notamment sur son engagement en faveur des femmes. Affirmée, rayonnante, Sampa The Great propose un rap riche, accrocheur et intelligent ; un rap puissant et groovy, supporté par des arrangements caressés de R&B et de Jazz, où guitare électrique, batterie et synthétiseurs ont la part belle ; un rap touchant où la voix rauque de la chanteuse s’harmonise avec grâce aux choeurs limpides.

“A vibrant bricolage of Kalindula and Kwaito hip-hop, trap and spoken word, Zamrock and R&B” (The Guardian, 2022). The great Angélique Kidjo has nothing but praise for Sampa Tembo, with whom she has collaborated on several occasions, especially respecting her dedication as a female artist.  The radiant Sampa the Great confidently offers her listeners powerful, catchy rap music, richly infused with intelligence. Influenced by jazz and soul, her funky band prominently features electric guitar, drums and synth, while she raps in a husky voice, effortlessly harmonizing with a chorus of backing vocalists to deliver her moving lyrics.

Yordan & The Cuban Martinez Show au Festival Nuits d’Afrique

Pour se dégourdir les jambes et se mettre de bonne humeur, oublier tout le reste, rien de tel qu’une bonne dose de Musica cubana à la manière de Yordan Martinez, c’est-à-dire dans la pure tradition des grands cabarets de la Havane, de ceux qui ont accueilli les membres du Buena Vista Social Club avant qu’il ne devienne le Buena Vista Social Club. L’âge d’or de la musique cubaine est au cœur des partitions du tromboniste, arrangeur et directeur musical, qui s’est donné pour mission de diffuser sans relâche les rythmes de son île auprès du plus grand nombre. Les Son, Salsa, Cha-cha-cha, Timba, Rumba et Boléro du lauréat du Syli d’or de la musique du monde 2011 sont éblouissants et énergiques. Ça va danser !

Setting the tone for the last day of the festival in a most extravagant way, we have Larynx, whose latest album, Applaudissez bande de chameaux, was a true revelation this last year, presenting his wacky yet soulful garage rock odyssey.

Le festival offre dimanche en début de soirée une prestation de l’incandescente et transcendante musicienne performative N NAO, elle qui se concentre maintenant sur un projet solo après des années à tourner avec Klô Pelgag et Laurence-Anne, pour ne nommer que celles-là.

Sunday early evening, attendees will be treated to an intimate, but oh so! incandescent concert by transcendent performing artist, N NAO, who is now devoting all of her talents to a solo project, following years of touring alongside Klô Pelgag and Laurence-Anne, amongst others.

C’est dimanche à la Sala Rossa qu’aura lieu le premier spectacle à vie de La sécurité! Le nouveau collectif art-punk réunissant des membres de Chose Sauvages, Laurence-Anne, Jesuslesfilles, Silver Dapple, DATES et Pressure Pin confectionne précisément ses mélodies explosives pour agiter les planchers de danse. Sa rencontre avec le public pourrait laisser des marques.

On Sunday, La Sala Rossa will be the site for the first ever concert of new art punk collective: La Sécurité! Composed by members of Choses Sauvages, Laurence-Anne, Jesuslesfilles, Silver Dapples, DATES and Pressure Pin, this new Montreal outfit patents explosive, melodic scorchers meant to be blasted onto the dance floor. Disclaimer: Their first encounter with the public could leave marks.

Distorsion se terminera dimanche par l’apothéose de transes hypnotiques et d’instrumentations étranges, expérimentales, instables et terriblement vivantes que nous offre l’Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp. Douze musicien.ne.s directement descendus de Genève pour défendre un mélange presque rituel de free jazz, post punk, brass band, mixtures symphoniques et krautrock et déclamer en rage des textes puissants s’opposant à un monde qui part en lambeaux. Une de ces découvertes dont on entendra parler longtemps.

Distordion will conclude Sunday with an apotheosis of hypnotic trance, the result of strange, unstable and terribly vivid orchestrations to be delivered by the Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp. For the occasion, the twelve musicians leave the comfort of their Geneva compound in order to defend their ritualistic brand of free jazz that unifies elements from krautrock, post-punk, brass bands and symphonic mixtures, while also declaiming their opposition to a world falling to pieces through powerful lyrics. A concert that could very well be talked about for years to come.

Le Festival Nuits d’Afrique présente Les Frères Sissokho – Rythmes modernes du Sénégal

Un spectacle des Frères Sissokho, c’est une réunion de famille aux rythmes des percussions et de la kora. Un peu de Sabar par ci. Du Mbalax par là. On chante, on danse, on improvise sur fond de traditions transmises de génération en génération. On rit, on s’amuse. On sent presque l’odeur du Tiep fumant et le goût du jus de bissap. On se recueille parfois aussi. On apprécie les moments de pure beauté où opère la magie de la kora. Car les Frères Sissokho sont des griots. Et s’ils peuvent explorer la musique sous toutes ses coutures sans se perdre, c’est parce que leurs racines sont profondes et qu’ils ont l’intime conscience de devoir en préserver l’héritage.

The Sissokho Brothers in concert is like a family reunion of percussion instruments and the kora. Some sabar here, Mbalax over there, hip-hop, reggae, Afrobeat, it’s a party! Dancing, singing, improvising on the back of traditions handed down through the generations. Lots of laughter and good times—you can almost smell the steaming tiep and taste the bissap juice. And sometimes you just sit back and take in the pure magic of the kora. That’s because the Sissokho Brothers are griots. And if they are able to explore the music inside and out without getting lost, it’s because their roots run deep, giving them the profound sense of the traditions that must be preserved.

Concert anniversaire de l’Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Joliette

Le Festival s’apprêtait, à l’été 2020, à souligner le 50e anniversaire de l’Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Joliette, organisme phare d’une région qui s’est révélée au fil des décennies une véritable pépinière de talents musicaux. Si la pandémie en a décidé autrement, qu’à cela ne tienne : il n’est jamais trop tard pour célébrer ! Témoin de l’enracinement du Festival dans Lanaudière, ce concert est placé sous le signe des retrouvailles et du plaisir de faire de la musique ensemble.

In the summer of 2020, the Festival was preparing to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Orchestre symphonique des jeunes de Joliette, a flagship organization in the region, a true breeding ground for musical talent for many decades. But even though the pandemic dictated otherwise, it’s never too late to celebrate! In the image of the Festival’s deep roots in Lanaudière, this concert celebrates the pleasure of making music together, by reuniting the ensemble’s current and former members.

Si vous accordez vos oreilles aux fissures du San Andreas et que vous écoutez le gargouillement du monde, vous pourriez vous approcher du tonnerre tectonique qui jaillit de L.A. depuis quelques années sous la bannière de Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Ancré par les auteurs-compositeurs Dylan Sizemore et Josh Menashe, le groupe s’est entouré d’une porte tournante d’amis et de collaborateurs, chacun apportant sa propre fusion à la montagne de sons que les Witch Fingers maintiennent.

If you tune your ears to the cracks in the San Andreas and listen in for the world gurgling grind, you might come close to the tectonic thunder that’s been beaming out of L.A. for the past few years under the banner of Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Anchored by songwriters Dylan Sizemore and Josh Menashe, the band has kept a rotating door of friends and collaborators moving through their midst along the way, with each bringing their own particular melt to the mountain of sound the Witch Fingers maintain.
