Kaytraminé at Piknic: vitaminized!

Last April, Montreal producer & DJ Kaytranada and American rapper Aminé surprised many by announcing the birth of their duo KAYTRAMINÉ. In no time, they unveiled 4EVA, a first dance & hip-hop track in collaboration with Pharrell Williams, and announced the imminent release of an album.

In mid-May, the two men released KAYTRAMINÉ, an eleven-track effort lasting (only!) 34 minutes. Having been touted as THE project of the summer prior to its release, expectations were (very) high, which is one of the reasons why this opus left many wanting more. KAYTRAMINÉ is far from being a bad project, don’t get me wrong. However, the mood of the various tracks is not necessarily what you’d expect after listening to 4EVA. Despite this, the album features good verses from the rapper, interesting guests including Freddie Gibbs and Big Sean, and excellent production that serves the various speakers wonderfully. The two artists’ first collaborative effort will certainly not go down in history, but remains an interesting and different offer from what’s currently being done in hip-hop.

So, here I am at Parc Jean-Drapeau on a Thursday evening to see KAYTRAMINÉ live on stage. Yesterday, the two artists kicked off their short five-concert tour. As a fan of the duo’s solo material, this was a must-see for me, especially as Montreal was their only Canadian date. Kaytranada and Aminé put on an excellent 3-in-1 concert lasting around 75 minutes, and delighted the large crowd gathered near the FIZZ stage.

KAYTRAMINÉ got off to a strong start with a few tracks from their album, beginning with the intro Who He Iz followed by UGH UGH. On stage, Kaytranada took a back seat behind her console, while Aminé took center stage. From the outset, the two artists shine with their charisma and chemistry. It has to be said that they’ve known each other for several years; they actually collaborated on the remix of the song “Not at All” in 2015 (which they actually played during the concert) and the song Egyptian Luvr in 2018. After around twenty minutes, the Montreal DJ left the stage and Aminé strung together several of his most popular tracks, from “REEL IT IN” from “ONEPOINTFIVE” to “Caroline” from his debut album Good For You. We tend to forget it, but the 29-year-old rapper has had several good projects behind the tie since 2017. No doubt, it was during his solo moment that the crowd was most engaged.

You’ve probably already guessed it, but after a fifteen-minute solo performance by Aminé, it was Kaytranada’s turn to shine alone on stage. The Montrealer transformed Parc Jean-Drapeau into a dance floor with an excellent set of his own songs. Behind his table, the thirty-something was all smiles and dancing, and seemed to be having a great time. Afterwards, the two men joined forces on stage to close with “4EVA”, their best duet track (not once, but twice during the encore).

KAYTRAMINÉ put on quite a show on this sold-out evening of Piknic Électronik. The energy of both artists was contagious, and the construction of the concert was downright interesting. On stage, I found KAYTRAMINÉ’s songs more interesting and summery, especially with the crowd singing along. In the end, perhaps the two stars were right: by “summer album”, they meant that this project was designed for summer festivals.

Mind Against à la SAT

Mind Against est l’expression d’un projet musical qui puise dans les racines combinées de l’IDM, de la house et de la techno. Le duo Alessandro et Federico Fognini, né en Italie et basé à Berlin, est à l’origine de ce projet.

Leur don pour créer de l’émotion à travers les synthés et les instruments percussifs de leur studio se traduit de manière unique sur le dancefloor, où leur techno fluide et émouvante atteint des sommets dans le club. Ils s’inspirent des accroches psychédéliques des bande-son des années 1980 et de l’accent mis par la musique de danse moderne sur le design sonore pour créer un son distinctif et immensément puissant.

Expressing a musical venture which draws from the combined roots of IDM, house and techno, Mind Against are the Italian-born, Berlin-based duo of Alessandro and Federico Fognini.

Their gift for creating emotion through the synths and percussive instruments in their studio translates uniquely onto the dancefloor, where their slick, moving take on techno makes for a special kind of peak in the club. They draw from the psychedelic hooks of 1980s soundtracks and from modern dance musicʼs emphasis on sound design to create a distinctive and immensely powerful sound.

La toute première édition de l’Orchestre jazz des diplômé·es de l’Université de Montréal reçoit Ron Carter, une figure emblématique du jazz de notre époque. Reconnaissable à son style et son sens musical sans pareils, le contrebassiste s’est distingué tout au long de sa carrière grâce à sa pulsation imperturbable et à sa flexibilité rythmique. De Thelonious Monk à Mulgrew Miller, en passant par Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Wes Montgomery et Horace Silver, parmi tant d’autres, Ron Carter a traversé un grand pan de l’histoire du jazz en y laissant son empreinte.

The very first edition of the Orchestre jazz des diplômé·es de l’Université de Montréal (Université de Montréal Graduates Jazz Orchestra) is welcoming Ron Carter, an emblematic figure in the jazz of our time. Recognizable for his unmatched style and musicianship, the double bassist has distinguished himself throughout his long career thanks to his unshakable beat and his rhythmic flexibility. From Thelonious Monk to Mulgrew Miller by way of Miles Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Wes Montgomery and Horace Silver, among so many others, Ron Carter has covered and left his imprint on a great stretch of jazz history.

Dirty Dancing en concert à la Place des Arts

Véritable phénomène de la pop culture américaine, Dirty Dancing est présenté en version concert. Le film, entièrement remastérisé et présenté en version originale anglaise avec surtitres en français, est projeté sur écran géant, alors que trois chanteurs et cinq musiciens interprètent les chansons en direct. Et immédiatement après la projection, tout ce beau monde se déchaine durant vingt-cinq minutes en reprenant LIVE les grands succès du film, provoquant une immersion totale dans le glam des années 1980.

Dirty Dancing en concert, c’est replonger à l’été 1963 alors qu’une jeune fille sage, Baby (Jennifer Gray), est entraînée dans une folle aventure avec Johnny (Patrick Swayze), un séduisant professeur de danse. Au fil d’une chorégraphie envoutante et sensuelle se développe une histoire d’amour qui a marqué toute une génération. La musique du film a mérité l’Oscar de la meilleure bande sonore originale et l’album, qui est resté à la première place du Billboard durant 18 semaines, s’est vendu à 42 millions d’exemplaires dans le monde, en faisant un des albums les plus populaires de tous les temps.

A veritable phenomenon of American pop culture, Dirty Dancing is presented in concert. The film, entirely remastered and shown in the original English version with French surtitles, is projected onto a giant screen, while three singers and five musicians perform the songs live.  Immediately after the screening, the band is unleashed for a twenty-five minute afterparty with rousing renditions of the film’s greatest hits, creating a total immersion in the glamour of the 1980s. 

Dirty Dancing in Concert takes us back to the summer of 1963, when an innocent young girl, Baby (Jennifer Gray), is drawn into a wild affair with Johnny (Patrick Swayze), a seductive dance teacher.  Through the course of the spellbinding, sensual choreography, a love story develops that has marked an entire generation. The film’s score won the Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack, and the album, which stayed at #1 on the Billboard charts for 18 weeks, sold 42 million copies worldwide, making it one of the most popular albums of all time.

L’Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal avec Bendik Hofseth

L’Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) est très heureux d’accueillir à nouveau le compositeur, saxophoniste, chanteur et chef d’orchestre de jazz norvégien Bendik Hofseth. Ce concert en collaboration avec le OFF Festival de jazz sera l’occasion de lancer un album de ses œuvres vocales et instrumentales, arrangées pour l’ONJ par Jean-Nicolas Trottier et captées sur le vif au Studio TD en 2018. Pour cette occasion exceptionnelle, l’ONJ sera composé de 26 musiciens dont 8 vents, 13 cordes et une section rythmique.

Lorsque Bendik Hofseth s’est rendu à New York en 1987, et a remplacé l’immense saxophoniste Michael Brecker au sein du groupe Steps Ahead, cela en a surpris plusieurs. Un jeune de Lørenskog en Norvège, arrivant dans la capitale du jazz qu’est New York et se joignant à l’un des groupes de jazz les plus renommés des États-Unis!

Vous vous laisserez envoûter par la langue et la sonorité norvégiennes de Bendik Hofseth.

The Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal (ONJ) is delighted to welcome back Norwegian composer, saxophonist, singer and jazz bandleader Bendik Hofseth. This concert in collaboration with the OFF Jazz Festival will be the occasion to launch an album of his vocal and instrumental works, arranged for the ONJ by Jean-Nicolas Trottier and captured live at Studio TD in 2018. For this exceptional occasion, the ONJ will be made up of 26 musicians, including 8 winds, 13 strings and a rhythm section.

When Bendik Hofseth came to New York in 1987, replacing the great saxophonist Michael Brecker in the Steps Ahead group, it came as a surprise to many. A young man from Lørenskog, Norway, arriving in the jazz capital of New York and joining one of America’s most renowned jazz bands!

Nick Cave à la Place des Arts

Nick Cave sera en tournée nord-américaine en solo à automne 2023! Il sera accompagné de Colin Greenwood à la guitare basse et interprétera des chansons de son vaste catalogue.

Il joue, écrit et enregistre de la musique depuis plus de quarante ans. Il est surtout connu comme chanteur et compositeur du groupe Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. Son œuvre s’étend à un large éventail de disciplines créatives : composition de partitions, écriture de livres, de romans et de scénarios de films et, plus récemment, art de la céramique.

Nick Cave will be on a North American solo tour in Fall 2023! Performing songs from his extensive catalog, he will be accompanied by Colin Greenwood on bass guitar.

He has been performing, writing and recording music for more than forty years. He is best known as the lead singer and songwriter of Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds. His body of work extends across a diverse range of creative disciplines – score composition, writing of books, novels and film scripts, and more recently ceramic art.

Le superbe Concerto pour violon de Barber

Ancien lauréat du concours OSM, le charismatique violoniste canadien Blake Pouliot se joint à l’Orchestre pour jouer le Concerto de Barber. Tantôt lyrique, introspectif ou animé de rythmes fougueux dans le mouvement final, ce concerto représente un véritable tour de force pour l’interprète. La Negro Folk Symphony du compositeur afro-américain William Dawson forme une fusion originale entre les spirituals et l’esthétique symphonique postromantique, avec de furtifs clins d’œil aux compositeurs européens.

A former OSM Competition winner, the charismatic Canadian violinist Blake Pouliot joins forces with the Orchestra in Barber’s Violin Concerto. A masterpiece at turns lyrical or introspective, its last movement driven by a rhythmic fury, this concerto is an unquestionable tour de force for the soloist. The Negro Folk Symphony by African-American composer William Levi Dawson delivers a unique fusion of spirituals and post-Romantic symphonic aesthetics, with a few discreet nods to European composers.

L’objectif de cette soirée est de célébrer nos victoires pour les droits humains, mais aussi de mettre en lumière les défis qui nous attendent et de nous mobiliser pour les relever ensemble.

Les bénéfices réalisés permettront de financer le travail de défense et d’éducation aux droits humains d’Amnistie internationale qui, depuis plus de 60 ans, remporte de nombreuses victoires pour la liberté, la dignité et la justice.

Our objective is to celebrate our victories for human rights, but also to raise awareness of the challenges that lie ahead, and to join forces to address them together.

All profits will go to fund Amnesty International’s human rights education and advocacy work, which has been achieving victories for freedom, dignity, and justice for over 60 years.

Rappeur, DJ et producteur originaire de Toronto, iel a passé des années à parcourir la vie nocturne underground, séduit par l’exploration de la musique, de la culture et de la communauté qu’offrent les raves éclairées à la lumière rouge, les mosh pits des concerts punk et le faste de la scène des salles de bal (vogue). Établie dans les années 90, Misstress Barbara (jeu de mots entre Miss et Stress) est une DJ/Productrice pionnière et l’une des premières femmes DJ superstar qui a contribué à inspirer les générations futures avec ses sets techno explosifs. Tout en étant la tête d’affiche de festivals et d’événements majeurs dans le monde entier, elle a connu une période, dans les années 2000, où elle était régulièrement élue dans le Top 100 des DJ de DJ Mag.

Established in the 90s, Misstress Barbara (word play between Miss and Stress) is a pioneering DJ/Producer and one of the first female superstar DJs who helped inspire future generations with her explosive Techno sets. Whilst headlining major festivals and events globally, there was a period in the ’00s when she was consistently voted inside of DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs.(Misstress Barbara)
