These live recordings were taken from the 2016-2017 season of the Berlin orchestra, when the American composer was the artist in residence. This compilation brings together a collection of works composed at different times, the aim being to demonstrate to the European public the extent of John Adams’ talent. The Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is moving out of its comfort zone here and offers fascinating interpretations, including Harmonielehre (1985), The Wound-Dresser (1989) and the magnificent Gospel According to the Other Mary (2012). The musicality, sangfroid, power and fullness of the Berliners’ sound breathes fresh life into Adams’ post-minimalist language.
