For me, 2024 was the year of prog house, and this compilation album from the Barcelona-based record label and party collective MARICAS brings all my faves to one spot. Recently picked as Resident Advisor’s Party of the Year, MARICAS assembled the finest queer DJ legends for these nine peak-of-the-party tracks, including local Montrealers Maara and Regularfantasy.
A standout from this compilation is “El Ritmo & Yo” by Chico Blanco, a track I heard on Soundcloud earlier this year and played on repeat ever since. With laid-back vocals and a powerfully gurgling liquid bassline, this song single-handedly kept my ass shaking all summer long.
Another highlight is Roza Terenzi’s “Fine Gay,” a gently ominous, minor-key reworking of the Opus III techno classic that makes you think, Hmmm… Is it really gonna be a fine day tomorrow?
