Danny Brown is anything but an orthodox rapper. The title of the album should be a tip-off: “Atrocity Exhibition” is the song that opens Closer, Joy Division’s classic album. Let’s just say that few are the hip hop artists who claim to draw their inspiration from the post-punk group. Released on Warp, a label generally associated with advanced electro, this recording foregrounds that distinction. Pushing the envelope of the genre, the Michigan MC sets his madness and unique voice to music that is hyperactive at times, and downright dour at others.
