Willy Mitchell

Willy Mitchell est un musicien canadien des Premières nations originaire de la communauté algonquine de Kitigan Zibi, près de Maniwaki, au Québec. Mitchell a enregistré et fait des tournées principalement dans les années 1970 avec son groupe Desert River Band. Willy continue d’écrire des chansons qui découlent de ses expériences en amour, au travail et dans la vie en général.

Willy Mitchell is a Canadian First Nations musician originally from the Algonquin community of Kitigan Zibi, near Maniwaki, Quebec. Mitchell recorded and toured mostly in the 1970s with his Desert River Band. Willy continues to write songs that stem from his experiences in love, work and life in general.

ESMERINE

Cofondée par le percussionniste Bruce Cawdron et la violoncelliste Rebecca Foon en 2001, Esmerine, plusieurs fois lauréate d’un Juno, garde un pied dans le classique contemporain et le minimalisme de la fin du 20e siècle, l’autre dans un terrain sonore plus viscéral et lyrique né du post-rock, du punk, du folk et global.

Co-founded by percussionist Bruce Cawdron and cellist Rebecca Foon in 2001, multi Juno-winning Esmerine keeps one foot in contemporary classical and late 20th century Minimalism, the other in more visceral and lyrical sonic terrain born from post-rock, punk, folk and global.

Nadah El Shazly

À l’aide de la voix, d’enregistrements sur le terrain et d’instruments, Nadah El Shazly crée des pièces sonores obsédantes et des formes de chansons qui détournent la perception du temps par leurs couches complexes et leur structure dynamique.

Using voice, field recordings and instruments, she creates haunting sound pieces and songforms that hijack the perception of time with their complex layers and dynamic structure.

Kenzow at Club Balattou

« Les gens veulent quelque chose de rafraichissant », expliquait Kenzow à The Gazette, disant du même coup vouloir amener la coolitude de la guitare ouest-africaine dans les rues de la ville. Le fils d’Idrissa Ouedraogo manie une pop africaine inspirée de reggae, s’égarant parfois dans des recoins soukous.

Jeune artiste auteur-compositeur-interprète, originaire du Burkina Faso, il a posé ses bagages à Montréal il y a deux ans, après un passage par la France. On peut d’ailleurs l’entendre jouer de la musique dans les rues de Montréal ou dans le métro.

Avec des sonorités afro pop urbaine et reggae dans le style d’Afrique de l’Ouest, Kenzow souhaite toucher et émouvoir le plus de monde possible, peu importe les origines.

Très inspiré, le musicien passe son temps à la recherche de nouvelles sonorités, souvent accompagné de sa guitare. Fils du célèbre réalisateur Africain Idrissa Ouedraogo, Kenzow a été bercé par l’art et la culture, depuis son enfance.

“People want something refreshing,” Kenzow told The Gazette, saying he wanted to bring West African guitar coolness to the city streets. Idrissa Ouedraogo’s son wields a reggae-inspired African pop sound, sometimes straying into soukous corners.

A young singer-songwriter from Burkina Faso, he moved to Montreal two years ago after a stint in France. You can hear him playing music in the streets of Montreal or in the subway.

With urban Afro pop and reggae sounds in the style of West Africa, Kenzow wishes to touch and move as many people as possible, regardless of their origins.

Very inspired, the musician spends his time looking for new sounds, often accompanied by his guitar. Son of the famous African director Idrissa Ouedraogo, Kenzow has been rocked by art and culture since his childhood.

Jab Djab est un groupe tropical basé à Montréal, composé de trois musiciens originaires de Trinidad et Tobago.

Pionniers des musiques du monde à Montréal, ils sont Hot, hot, hot, à l’image du tube de The Merrymen, qui trône en haut de leur répertoire. Reggae, soca, calypso, zouk… Leur musique cabriole d’une île antillaise à l’autre, avec une touche de pop américaine. Comme le jab, diable taquin, personnage carnavalesque des Caraïbes, ils sont des amuseurs publics. Un son toujours énergique et haut en couleur.

Célébrer Nuits d’Afrique sans Ross, Wayne et André? Impossible ! Ils étaient là au tout début, avec leur sens de la fête, leur espièglerie et leur immense talent pour faire lever le public. Toujours aussi dynamiques, généreux, enjoués, explosifs, ils s’entourent pour cette soirée d’une panoplie d’artistes venus rendre un hommage de feu à la pluralité des rythmes.

Like the jab, teasing devil, carnival character of the Caribbean, they are public entertainers. A sound always energetic and colorful.

They were there at the very beginning, with their sense of celebration, their mischievousness and their immense talent to get the public up. As dynamic, generous, playful and explosive as ever, they are surrounded for this evening by a panoply of artists who have come to pay a fiery tribute to the plurality of rhythms.

Le RockAfrika c’est du Rock’n Blues aux couleurs et saveurs d’Afrique où la voix rockailleuse et les doigts magiques aux claviers de Guy Mapoko s’entremêlent avec les mains envoûtantes, sur les percussions africaines de Moise Yawo Matey pour vous charmer, bercer, planer, voyager, réchauffer enfin danser.

C’est un mélange du feu, de la terre, de l’eau et de l’air.

The RockAfrika Duo was born from the collaboration of the singer, keyboardist, author, composer and performer, Guy Mapoko, and the percussionist Moise Yawo Matey.

With a repertoire based on original compositions and great classics, they have pushed the limits of their instruments, to come out with a stunning rock and vocal musical sound, tinged with African colors and flavors. A sound rich in texture, enveloping and powerful!

Influencée à parts égales par les Coltrane et la musique carnatique, la compositrice et chanteuse Amirtha Kidambi, rejointe ici par le percussionniste Matt Evans, est au cœur de nombreuses sphères importantes du jazz contemporain. En duo, Kidambi et Evans créent un rituel rythmique éprouvant pour les nerfs visant à purifier. En provenance de Vancouver, Feven Kidane est un compositeur, trompettiste, bassiste et musicien électronique éthiopien-canadien qui s’inspire des traditions de la Black American Music (“jazz”) des années 60 et 70, en étudiant ses composantes fondamentales que sont la décolonisation, la création, la spiritualité et l’auto-libération.

Music celebrating free jazz and other untethered kinds of music. This show begins with Nova Scotia quartet New Hermitage, who make beautiful, patient chamber jazz that seeks to dismantle sonic hierarchies and refocus on the living, breathing world. Then, vital NYC artist and improviser Chris Williams unfolds a set of trumpet, electronics and text, creating a lush sonic tapestry tapping into ancestral trauma and power. J. Pavone String Ensemble closes the show with selections from their most recent album, …Of Late, that goes deep on the physicality of sound and performance, offering long tones, micro-vibrations and convergent explorations for violin+viola.
