Festival International de Jazz de Montréal : Joshua Redman Group au Théâtre Maisonneuve

Le nouvel album de Joshua Redman, Words Fall Short, marque une évolution naturelle dans son art plutôt qu’un changement radical suite à son précédent album Where Are We. Alors que celui-ci mettait en vedette un chanteur, son nouvel opus s’articule autour de nouvelles compositions inédites, développées pendant la pandémie et interprétées par un quatuor jeune et plein de fraîcheur. Redman a réuni le pianiste Paul Cornish, le bassiste Philip Norris et le batteur Nazir Ebo, des musiciens qu’il décrit comme exceptionnellement talentueux, intuitifs et collaboratifs. Le groupe a développé une alchimie unique au cours d’une année de concerts, ce qui a conduit Redman à réaliser qu’ils étaient prêts à enregistrer. Les participations exceptionnelles de la saxophoniste Melissa Aldana, du trompettiste Skylar Tang et de la chanteuse Gabrielle Cavassa ajoutent de la profondeur à certains morceaux, soulignant l’engagement de Redman en faveur d’un jeu expressif et conversationnel plutôt que de solos compétitifs. Plusieurs titres et thèmes s’inspirent d’œuvres littéraires, notamment celles de Cormac McCarthy et Yiyun Li. Le nom de l’album vient de Where Reasons End de Li, faisant écho à la conviction de Redman dans la résonance émotionnelle de la musique et du langage, même lorsqu’ils sont insuffisants. Au fond, Words Fall Short est une réflexion sur l’imperfection humaine, la créativité et la connexion, embrassant la beauté ineffable que l’on trouve dans la collaboration spontanée et l’expérience partagée et imparfaite de l’être humain.

Joshua Redman’s new album Words Fall Short follows his acclaimed Where Are We, marking a natural evolution in his artistry rather than a departure. While the previous album featured a vocalist, this latest work is centered around new, previously unheard compositions developed during the pandemic and brought to life by a fresh, younger quartet. Redman assembled pianist Paul Cornish, bassist Philip Norris, and drummer Nazir Ebo—musicians he describes as exceptionally talented, intuitive, and collaborative. The group cultivated a unique chemistry over a year of performances, leading Redman to realize they were ready to record. Guest appearances by saxophonist Melissa Aldana, trumpeter Skylar Tang, and vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa add depth to select tracks, highlighting Redman’s commitment to expressive, conversational playing rather than competitive soloing. Lyrical inspirations and literary references, including works by Cormac McCarthy and Yiyun Li, inform several titles and themes. The album’s name comes from Li’s Where Reasons End, echoing Redman’s belief in the emotional resonance of music and language—even when they fall short. At its core, Words Fall Short is a reflection on human imperfection, creativity, and connection, embracing the ineffable beauty found in spontaneous collaboration and the shared, flawed experience of being human.

Serge Fiori – Seul Ensemble à la salle Maurice-O’Bready

Serge Fiori – Seul ensemble, nouvelle mouture du spectacle présenté pour la première fois le 6 mars 2019 au Théâtre St-Denis, propose une relecture audacieuse et visuelle de l’œuvre de Serge Fiori. On y retrouve ses moments forts, enrichis de nouveaux passages inspirés des sept dernières années, dont Kwe!, un projet musical dont Serge était particulièrement fier. La musique demeure le fil conducteur du spectacle. Revisitées par Louis-Jean Cormier, Alex McMahon et Guillaume Chartrain, les chansons intemporelles de Serge continuent d’unir les générations et de nourrir l’imaginaire collectif. Le Cirque Éloize, complice de la création originale, est de retour sous la direction de Benoit Landry (Chicago) qui revisitera la mise en scène.Quant aux décors, détruits lors du déluge du 16 août 2024, ils seront entièrement repensés pour offrir une scénographie renouvelée. ‍Serge Fiori – Seul ensemble, un voyage musical et visuel où l’âme de Serge Fiori continue de résonner, encore et toujours…

Serge Fiori – Alone Together, a new version of the show first presented on March 6, 2019, at Théâtre St-Denis, offers a bold and visually rich reinterpretation of Serge Fiori’s body of work. It features his greatest moments, enhanced with new passages inspired by the past seven years, including Kwe!, a musical project that Serge held particularly dear. Music remains the guiding thread of the performance. Revisited by Louis-Jean Cormier, Alex McMahon, and Guillaume Chartrain, Serge’s timeless songs continue to unite generations and fuel the collective imagination. Cirque Éloize, a collaborator on the original creation, returns under the direction of Benoit Landry (Chicago), who will reimagine the staging. As for the sets, destroyed during the flood of August 16, 2024, they will be entirely redesigned to offer a renewed scenography. Serge Fiori – Alone Together is a musical and visual journey where the soul of Serge Fiori continues to resonate, again and again.

Viva Vivaldi : Quatre saisons & Gloria à la Maison symphonique

Pour célébrer le 70e anniversaire des Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal (PCMR), cette soirée enchantera les spectateurs avec deux chefs-d’œuvre d’Antonio Vivaldi. Sous la direction d’Andrei Feher, le concert débutera avec les célèbres Quatre saisons, op. 8, une œuvre lumineuse et vibrante, mettant en vedette le violoniste solo Marc Djokic. Les quatre concertos, La primavera, L’estate, L’autunno, et L’inverno, exploreront les changements de saisons avec une intensité qui capte à la perfection l’esprit de la nature. Après l’entracte, le majestueux Gloria de Vivaldi, une œuvre sacrée envoûtante sera présentée avec Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, dirigée par Andrew Gray.

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal (PCMR), this enchanting evening will feature two masterpieces by Antonio Vivaldi. Under the direction of Andrei Feher, the concert will open with the famous Four Seasons, Op. 8, a luminous and vibrant work showcasing OCM’s concertmaster Marc Djokic as soloist. The four concertos, Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Fall, will explore the changing seasons with a striking intensity that perfectly captures nature’s ever-shifting moods. After intermission, the OCM will present the majestic Gloria, Vivaldi’s captivating sacred work, featuring Les Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal under their Musical Director, Andrew Gray.

Éléonore Dessureault est une autrice-compositrice-interprète émergente qui regorge d’ambition et de créativité. Sa musique aux influences pop et jazz envoute comme mystifie son auditoire. Son jeu de piano couplé à ses textes, tantôt abstraits, tantôt d’une clairvoyance envoutante, vous transportent dans un univers excentrique où tout est couleur, tout est sensation, tout est musique. Elle sera accompagnée de Zakary Tremblay à la guitare, Dérek Migneault à la basse et Zakk Amiot à la batterie. Elle lancera son premier album, Le sentier des fougères, au Café du Clocher le 4 juin 2026.

Éléonore Dessureault is an emerging singer-songwriter brimming with ambition and creativity. Her music, influenced by pop and jazz, captivates and mesmerizes her audience. Her piano playing, paired with lyrics that are at times abstract and at times strikingly insightful, transports listeners into an eccentric universe where everything is color, everything is sensation, everything is music. OSQ : Carmina Burana à la salle Louis-Fréchette

Une musique comme venue d’âges anciens, mue par des forces telluriques, des rythmes ancestraux, des chants originels aux résonances universelles : voici comment Carl Orff a imaginé ses Carmina Burana. Il choisit 24 poèmes profanes tirés d’un recueil du XIIIe siècle, découvert dans une abbaye bavaroise, pour composer une cantate scénique monumentale. L’œuvre s’ouvre et se conclut avec le célèbre O Fortuna, un chœur ensorcelant, puissant, tout simplement inoubliable. Une distribution canadienne de premier plan magnifie les thèmes du destin, de l’amour et de la fortune mis en relief par Orff par une utilisation saisissante des chœurs, de l’orchestre et des percussions : un concert qu’on ne sera pas près d’oublier! En première partie, l’Orchestre interprète une création d’Éric Morin, compositeur québécois et professeur à l’Université Laval. Son œuvre s’inspire de la première partie du roman dystopique de George Orwell : 1984.

Music that seems to come from ancient times, driven by telluric forces, ancestral rhythms, and primal chants with universal resonance : this is how Carl Orff imagined Carmina Burana. He selected 24 secular poems from a 13th-century collection discovered in a Bavarian abbey to compose a monumental staged cantata. The work opens and closes with the famous O Fortuna, an enchanting and powerful chorus that is simply unforgettable. A leading Canadian cast brings to life the themes of fate, love, and fortune highlighted by Orff through striking use of chorus, orchestra, and percussion, creating a concert experience that audiences will not soon forget. In the first half of the program, the orchestra will perform a new work by Quebec composer and Université Laval professor Éric Morin. His composition is inspired by the first part of the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.
