Texan trio Khruangbin made their mark by insinuating Thai tangents into their lightweight, lackadaisical southern-fried funk rock, coaxing out little moments of wonder with expressive bass, crisp drums and bright, mercurial guitar motifs. 2018 and this second album found them trawling with a wider net, bringing in hints of disco, proto-zouk, and vintage Persian psych (the killer “Maria También”). There is a refreshing lack of rigour in segregating the instrumental-rock sounds Khruangbin toy with — they’re not presiding over stern lessons in ethnomusicology, they’re taking a potluck approach to a sort of aural comfort food. Eminently satisfying.
