Here’s the 22nd album on the shelf for Russian pianist Evgeni Koroliov, presented by the Tacet label. Koroliov, an old hand, has recorded Schubert, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven – in short, most of the great works of the repertoire. The pianist delivers pieces here that have accompanied him all his life, the well-known nocturnes, waltzes, études, and mazurkas by the great French romantic composer Chopin. With this disc recorded on a Steinway D-274 in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche church in Berlin, Koroliov offers a wise and mature interpretation. Nothing is artificial here – the pianist performs with precision and restraint, elegance and refinement. The sound result is frankly magnificent and soothing.
