Elegant jazz, with a firm poise and some fine exchanges between the members of the trio made up of Roberts on piano (originally from Winnipeg), Matt Penman on double bass and Quincy Davis on drums. A classic trio, then, playing in the court of the great examples of the genre, in a cool way but with a certain drive. A few pretty ballads balance the stroll in a subdued light, always with an impeccable sense of stimulating and refined discourse. You won’t find the astonishment of truly outstanding albums here, but you’ll feel the full extent of a know-how that is both vast and intimately shared with delicate emotions.
Five of the seven tracks are Roberts’ own compositions, the other two standards (My Ship and and You Do Something to Me). The originals have the quality of standards of the trio’s great art, and the standards have enough spontaneity that Roberts’ touch seems to have brought them to life. A fine balance between conformity and personality.
