Naxx Bitota au Festival Nuits d’Afrique

 « Du Congo au Canada en passant par la Belgique, c’est le destin de l’étonnante Naxx Bitota, une artiste qui se sert de sa musique pour faire passer un message d’ouverture à l’autre » (TV5, 2022). Dans tous les registres, du plus festif au plus mélancolique, sa voix marque. Résonne. Émeut. Le genre de voix qui ponctue les grands événements de la vie. Aussi, sa présence scénique impressionne. L’enjouée Naxx Bitota incarne la force et la splendeur de la femme congolaise. Sa Rumba exécutée en mode Sébéné, avec de longues séquences de guitare improvisées, flirte avec le Soukous. Naxx Bitota y incorpore sa touche personnelle branchée sur une Afropop moderne, qui rend le tout irrésistible. On attend avec impatience son 1e album, Kuetu, d’ici l’été.

Boy Harsher présente son nouvel album « The Runner (Original Soundtrack) ». Le cinquième album de Boy Harsher n’est pas un album traditionnel – il s’agit de la bande originale d’un court métrage d’horreur écrit, produit et réalisé par le duo, intitulé « The Runner », sorti en janvier 2022. L’album balance des instrumentaux cinématiques avec des chansons pop qui repoussent les limites du son de Boy Harsher.

Nuits d’Afrique présente Kizaba au Théâtre Fairmount

Quand Daft Punk et David Guetta rencontrent Papa Wemba et Zaiko Langa Langa. Ordinateur dans une main, percussions traditionnelles dans l’autre, l’auteur, compositeur et multi-instrumentiste Lionel Kizaba se positionne comme le digne descendant de la Société des ambianceurs et des personnes élégantes (SAPE), un mouvement à la fois culturel et social congolais qui a connu plusieurs vies et rappelle à quel point le monde est en quête de repère, comme le souligne Alain Mabanckou. Se réappropriant les traditions avec style, en proposant une musique Afro-électro aux mélodies accrocheuses et funky, Kizaba, qui a étudié le Jazz à l’Institut national des arts de Kinshasa, échantillonne à sa manière le mouvement afro-futuriste.

Daft Punk/David Guetta meets Zaiko Langa Langa/Papa Wemba. Computer in one hand, some kind of drum in the other, the singer-songwriter-composer and multi-instrumentalist Lionel Kizaba considers himself a son of La SAPE —“Société des ambianceurs et des personnes élégantes,” literally the “Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People”—a Congolese movement, as cultural as it is social, that has had several incarnations, a reminder that we are all in search of some kind of benchmark, as writer and academic Alain Mabanckou has wisely noted. Kizaba, who studied Jazz at the Kinshasa National Institute of Arts, reclaims African traditions with a personal flair, delivering an Afro-electro sound with catchy, funky melodies as he takes on Afrofuturism in his own way.

For his new opus, « Generation Quartet », Yannick Rieu returns to a quartet formula (piano, double bass, drums and saxophones). One foot in the jazz tradition, the other in innovation, this group is characterized by the cohesion of its members, who explore, dialogue and exchange with each other. In addition to the unbridled spontaneity, the collective energy of this group shines through. Le Festival Nuits d’Afrique présente La Nuit de la Kora avec Madou Sidiki Diabaté et Diely Mori Tounkara

Madou Sidiki Diabaté avait à peine trois ans la première fois que ses doigts ont glissé sur les cordes de la noble kora. 6 ans à son premier concert. Et 10 ans à sa première tournée internationale. Il faut dire que celui qu’on surnomme Madou est issu d’une très longue lignée de griots joueurs de kora. Lui et son frère, le tout aussi célèbre Toumani Diabaté, sont de la 71e génération. Gardien de l’histoire, de la culture et des traditions mandingues (un rôle qu’il prend très au sérieux), celui qui a travaillé avec Baaba Maal et Salif Keita magnifie le potentiel infini de son instrument au son pur, faisant résonner avec sensibilité tout le charme des cultures ouest-africaines.

Ce soir-là, lui et Diely Mori Tounkara, établi à Montréal et lauréat de nombreux prix  dont le Syli d’or de la musique du Monde et le Coup de cœur du Conseil des arts de Montréal,  feront vibrer la salle à l’unisson. Leurs jeux de kora respectifs, fluides et inspirés, résultats d’une grande maîtrise technique, mettront en valeur toute la magie des rythmes mandingues, guidés par une réelle envie d’aller à la rencontre de l’autre et large sourire bienveillants en prime.

He was barely three years old when his fingers first slid along the chords of the noble kora, he played his first concert at the age of six and, at ten, he was already on his first international tour. It isn’t surprising that Madou Sidiki Diabaté, known simply as Madou, and his equally famous brother, Toumani Diabaté, come from a long line of griot kora player—in fact, they represent the 71st generation. As a guardian of Mandinka history, culture and traditions (an honour that he takes very seriously), Madou, who has played with such greats as Baaba Maal and Salif Keita, will have the opportunity to exhibit the boundless potential of his pure sounding instrument, by delicately echoing the charm and traditions of West Africa, during the special kora night, which promises to be moving and luminous.

That evening, he and Diely Mori Tounkara, based in Montreal and winner of numerous awards, including the Syli d’Or de la musique du monde or the Conseil des arts de Montréal’s Coup de Coeur, will make the room vibrate in unison. Their kora playing, fluid and inspired, results of a great technical mastery, will highlight all the magic of Mandingo rhythms, guided by a real desire to go and meet the other, with a wide benevolent smile as a bonus.

La 9e édition du Festival International Mizik Kreyol de Montréal (FIMKM) aura lieu dans le quartier Saint-Michel ce weekend!

Les festivités qui se tenaient à La Tohu se déplacent au Parc Frédéric-Back, à quelque 200 mètres de la place habituelle. La programmation de cette année comprend des artistes bien connus de l’industrie de la musique créole, notamment Nu-Look, T-Vice, Djapot, Fly, Katel Mizik, Ekip, 911 Konpa, Florence El Luche, etc. En plus des concerts, le site extérieur comprendra des kiosques de restauration, des animations sur place, des structures gonflables et du maquillage pour les enfants.

Véritable légende de la scène underground anglaise, Iration Steppas évolue dans le milieu des sound system depuis 1993. Repoussant sans relâche les limites technologiques du système de son, le duo demeure à l’avant-garde du genre. Souvent imité, jamais égalé, Iration Steppas a su préserver son identité unique, portée par un Techno-dub progressif qui lui a permis de faire le tour du monde.  Célébrons ensemble 30 ans de carrière pour une première au Canada.

Bricolée maison, des caissons jusqu’à l’électronique, la sono de WorldWild Soundsystem (12 kW !) fait vibrer Montréal, réhaussant à grands coups de basse des titres reggae et dub qu’ils ont passionnément dénichés et qu’ils fusionnent allégrement à même d’authentiques vinyles.

A true legend of the British underground music scene, Iration Steppas has been flourishing within the sound system culture since 1993. Constantly pushing the technological limits of sound systems, the duo remains on the cutting edge of this musical style. Often imitated but never equalled, Iration Steppas has managed to preserve their uniqueness with a progressive techno-dub that has taken them on tour around the world. A Canadian premiere celebrating a career of 30 years. 

Homemade, from the cabinets to electronic components, WorldWild Soundsystem’s custom-made sound system (12 kW!) makes Montreal vibrate,  enhancing with great bass strokes reggae and dub tracks that they have passionately unearthed and that they merge cheerfully with authentic vinyl records.

Without a brutal evaluation of their own becoming, TV Priest might have never made their second album. Heralded as the next big thing in post-punk, they were established as a bolshy, sharp-witted outfit, the kind that starts movements with their political ire.

Samuel Blais Quartet au Dièse Onze

Samuel Blais remporte ses premiers concours de musique classique dès l’âge de 15 ans. Après 3 ans d’études au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, il termine un Baccalauréat en jazz à l’Université McGill, suivit d’une Maîtrise à la prestigieuse école Manhattan School of Music à New York. Après 3 années passées à New York, il s’est produit avec des musiciens de renommé mondiale dans le domaine du jazz tels que David Liebman, Greg Osby, Jim Black, Larry Grenadier, Donny McCaslin, Ari Hoenig, David Binney, et plusieurs autres. Nommé « Révélation Jazz 2011-2012” par Radio-Canada, il s’est produit un peu partout aux États-Unis et au Canada, de même qu’en France, en Allemagne, en Belgique, au Mexique et à Hong Kong. 

Recently awarded with the « Jazz Revelation for 2011-2012 by Radio-Canada » Samuel Blais has won several classical music competitions starting around age 15. He studied at the Montreal Conservatory of Music for 3 years after which he moved on to Jazz at McGill University where he completed a bachelors degree in Jazz Performance which led him to continue his musical education at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in New York, obtaining a Masters degree in Jazz Performance.  The 3 years he spent in New York allowed him to perfect his art and to perform with worldwide renown musicians such as Greg Osby, David Liebman, Jim Black, Larry Grenadier, Nate Smith, Donny McCaslin, Jamie Baum, Ari Hoenig, Terri Lyne Carrington etc. Samuel Blais performed extensivly in the USA and Canada, as well as in France, Belgium, Mexico and Hong Kong.
